so, i have a 1994 toyota 4x4 pickup with 31x10.5's, pushbar/brushguard, bedliner, fogs, and a pretty damn nice custom stereo setup. it's my daily driver, and i'd like to get a bit more pep out of it. gas mileage hasn't ever really been a concern of mine, but i'd like to keep it DECENT. i get about 22-24mpg right now. it only has 125,000 miles on it, and burns NO oil at all. it's in 100% perfect running condition.

the truck is all black, and has some of the typical rust spots on it. i'm getting new fenders for it in the spring, and fixing the rust in the rear. it's not that bad yet, but i want to stop it before it GETS too bad to mess with.

basically, i'm looking for ways to make it a bit more powerful. i've already decided on the engnbldr head/OS valves/cam package. it's a ported/polished head with 1mm OS valves, and a mild cam to get some more air in. i'll be getting a header, and then a custom cat-back for it.

any thoughts on going turbo? i know they made a turbo 22-re, but i also know it wasn't really that great. if i put a higher flow pump in the tank, maybe got an AFPR on there, and a small turbo, i wonder what this thing would be capable of?

i look at it this way. i really want to do a bit of off-roading with it. nothing too serious, as it's all stock drivetrain. the only thing different from stock is the 31" tires. but if i put a small turbo on there, it wouldn't DECREASE my low end power because it's still a "high" compression motor, ya know? so if anything, a small turbo on there could help quite a bit.

i don't need the extra power for offroad. i've been offroad in it several times before, and it's surprised me with it's capabilities in stock form. low gear on this thing turns it into an animal!

but for the daily-driving part, i can barely pass people. i don't want a gearing reduction with only 31" tires, but i also don't think i want anything much larger than those.

i already have a good idea of the path i want to go, but suggestions never hurt! thanks everyone. :)

the 22RTE wasn't that great because of it's shitty turbo, throw a ct-26 on that bad boy and have some fun.

hmm... and i DO have a spare turbo... now my mind is working overtime. :)

and my truck IS four wheel drive. ;)

i thought about the small block chevy idea, but if i did that, i'd DEFINATLY want fuel injection, and i spend too much time on my supra to deal with that. though, i'd rather do a 1uz... i wanna keep it all toyota.

i suppose a stock ct-26 wouldn't bee too large for it with some headwork. maybe if i push 6psi out of it, i could keep the motor in one piece with some tuning, too. :) though, i'd have to get another wideband. this sounds like it's getting expensive. :p

tanya, you don't think something smaller, like a nissan turbo would be better, or a small mitsubishi? or maybe even a modified 3sgte exhaust manifold. i wonder how different they are from the 22re.

looks like i've got more research to do! :)

thanks for the suggestions thus far.

and in order to keep this a reliable daily driver, i'm going to say that i can't boost it very much. probably 6psi at most. with the headwork and a full exhaust, it's supposedly capable of about 200bhp, which isn't half bad for that little truck!

a clean 250rwhp would be good. i hope the clutch and the rest of the drivetrain is up to the task...

The 22RE is a fairly large 4 banger at 2.4 liters, I would imagine a CT26 would be fine, but I'm not really a turbo head so maybe others will chime in.

You should browse around at celica-gts.com for turbo ideas as well as other 4x4 truck forums that love the Yotas
