Stupid Volk lugnut key

SO im mounting my VOlks on today after driving to Upgrade Motorsports in Northridge to pick up the tuner lugs specific to the Volk GT-C and AV3 and it came with the lug key. So I mount the rears no problem, but when I torque down the fronts, I notice that its grinding into the wheel, stripping it of the finish and into the wheel. So what I had to do is grind down the key so it is thinner but thats only after tearing up some of the wheel already :(

Stupid thing...you would think it would be designed not to do that.

lol, that would eat it up even more. The guy at upgrade also said never to impact these lugs, just use your arms for about 60-70 lbs. Theyre on, a little dinged up buy I guess you cant see it unles youre looking close but it still bugs me. But more importantly, its time for paint and body to round it all off.

same thing happened w/ my av3's (I use gorilla nutz). unfortunately, i think its due to poor hole design. I tried some other lug nuts that used an internal hex key, but they had a habit of coming loose.

you could always try some spray on white grease on the outside of the key and then wipe it off after...that way there is something between the wheels and the key...

Well it only happens with the fronts, so either the fronts should use longer lugs, or the studs should be longer. But grinding down the key to have a tapered rounded edge did the trick, unfortunatly after already doing some damage to one of the wheels.

So to anyone with AV3's or GT-Cs or those planning to get them, check the key very carefully, and if it looks like it will rub up front, use a wheel grinder and grind off the leading edge.

AV3's are long discontinued...not that it matters that much in the light of this thread.

you should never use an impact on any lugs nuts. torque wrench is the best. arms work good to but iam sure you can put down more than 60-70lbs.

Using an impact wrench is okay on most lugnuts as long as you use a pre-torque stick. It's basically a thin extension that acts as a spring and limits the torque that the lugnut sees. You also have to have the gun on a regulator and have the gun on one of its lower settings.

You should ALWAYS torque your lugnuts to 75-80 ft. lbs. no matter what lugnuts or wheels you have on your car. That's just a rule. Sorry about your luck with that key, hope it goes better for you.

^ What he said, I use those at work. When you torque lower the car just so the wheel(s) just kisses the ground. That way if you didn't tighten a nut the wheel will seat all the way.
