no im not gonna helicoil if i can help it.

i figure i am just going to tap the holes out to the next size now that two of them stripped. but im not sure the original size.

what is the next size up? and where can i get a stud and nut that will fit as a replacement?

thanks

i was reading over some threads a few days ago and i thought from what i was reading, that just tapping to 7/16's would hold fine. i only have a metric threading set and i wasnt sure i wanted to buy another set, thats why i was checking what the next size was i could do (apparently its 7/16s:icon_bigg)

helicoil them. then you wont have any more probs. i helicoil all my exhaust stud holes now when an engine is out, wether they need it or not. and i put the coils in with red loctite so they wont come back out. just dont use too much, dont want it getting on the inner threads. need to be able to remove the studs in case they ever break or strip.

Soon to be working for me if we ever get around to pulling the engine for everything else...

You make it sound hard. It'll be out in two hrs with kinders in my hand.

I need all types of gaskets and seals... You guessed it, we got a bleeder. Leakin oil wherever it can. But what do you expect out of 216,000 miles?

EDIT: OP... I think the best way to go would be helicoil rather than just tapping them out to 7/16. Just my opinion.

Pulled threads are usually indicitive of a soft head.....

Coils will help but keep it in mind that the head will probably banana if/when it's pulled.

head and block were both decked for a mhg like 10k miles ago.

i guess i will helicoil it then. that burnout turned into much more of a headache than i had planned lol.

btw, what are the stock size studs?

When I was building my 7m I remember threading the studs in and going WTF.

When I go to tear it down for the next stage my helicoils is on my list of things to inspect. How do you plan on getting the coils in? Just curious.

do you think just tapping to 7/8 would hold? im not building something crazy. just something that runs good. is it possible to just tap it to 10m?

I come from a land down under
7/8??? (1/8th of an inch UNDER 1")

The "issue" as I mentioned is the head is slowly annealing from the exhaust side and this is why the studs have pulled the threads, tapping a bigger hole will eventually end in the same way.

Helicoils work as they tend to wedge themselves as they're tightened, Keenserts are another alternative as they use locking pins once screwed in, Timeserts are another great way to do the repair.
