Strategic planning for home invasion situation

Was on the phone with a friend of mine who suspected that somebody was in her house. I walked her through the steps I would take if the situation deemed necessary and she thought I was crazy. Just wondering what some of you guys would do if you though somebody was in your house.

I also would like some input on setting up a plan for such occasion at my house. I know a safe room is needed along with a weapon of some sort. Any advice?

Likely to soon to have a mossberg 500 as a little present to myself. My current house isn't very big, so there's definitely no panic room or anything. Just me, the girl, the dog and whatever my weapon of choice may be.

I have several weapons stashed in various easy-to-access places throughout our house (no kids). Any place where I sit or lay down in my house has a weapon in reach.
Long gun in the closet, pistols throughout the house.

I have two Akitas who would lay down their lives for me. Not that I would want them as my first defense, I'm awful fond of them.

I try not to be complacent. I listen to the dogs when they tell me something is amiss, or if they're agitated. We have all kinds of firearms in this house. I keep the doors locked, etc.

We recently realized that we came awful close to a home invasion. We were home, and Mike heard something on the porch and the dogs went nuts. He didn't see anything, but when we were outside a few days later in the daylight, our porch chairs had been moved and the tabs on our window screen had been pried open on one side. Very scary shit. I guess the dogs losing it scared the guy off.

Needless to say, we've been a little more careful about what goes on around here.

Rules on firearms at home make them useless for defense up here... however, that means two things... folks breaking into houses rarely carry firearms either, and this tends to favor the defenders:

Realistically, though, if someone breaks in to take my television, they can have it. Hell, I'll carry one end for 'em. As long as they aren't a danger to my family, I don't really care enough.

in arms reach all the time, though i do live in a low crime area, one never knows. and since us canadians arnt allowed guns, knives are next best thing (i have quite a few)

as for a safe room, i have my tool chest in my room, so i can easily move it in front of the door and baracade myself in.

Home invasions are about as common as good concerts here in Wyoming, so I'm not terribly worried. I would like a Mossberg Persuader though, the sound of a shotgun being cocked is enough to make someone think twice on it's own. Plus, kinda hard to miss with a short stock shotgun.

Also wouldn't hurt to post "trespassers will be shot. survivors will be shot again" somewhere in the entryway.

Couple of ideas off the top of my head,

Steel doors and frames w/deadbolts.

ALL windows on the first floor and basement made of plexiglass.

Don't keep ladders and other tools laying around the sides of the house.

Small annoying dogs make great alarms.

Crazy carnivorous dog.

Your choice off firearm with or without a light you can easily access

Home invasion ammo carrier for said weapon

Level IIIA body armor (Should be #1)

I have 13 different blades ranging from 3in' to 70'.... (yes i mean "70") All around my room witch is small enough to jump from one side to the other in one step, so i dare someone to brake in here, he won't leave with his balls in tact.. That and I take MMA and my mother teaches Tai-chi (1st degree black belt) so IF they make it passed her then they have to go through the 230+LB kickboxer who has a thing for blades ... yeah, we're good lol

Seriously though, I've always had an affection for bladed weapons, but what are you going to do with a 70" long blade, swing it right into a wall/ceiling/floor? I mean a 28" katana can be a bit unwieldy indoors, I can't imagine something nearly 2.5x that long...

My cousin is 300 lbs 6'6" and does MMA for a good work out. He has always said he will surrender if someone has a gun...don't think because you have a blade and are a badass that a bullet won't put you on the ground. That mentality will get you killed quick.
