I'll start off by saying i have used the search and read everything related but no one has had this problem that i have read. I have and 89 turbo auto the stock temp gauge stopped working so i installed an aftermarket gauge. I've done a coolant flush and also replaced the t stat and burped all the air out of the system. The problem i'm having is that the car starts to overheat only with the hood closed. I can let it run for about ten min at a raised idle with the hood up and the temp stays within normal operating range but as soon as i close the hood and let it idle the temp starts to rise. I'm thinking it could be the aftermarket gauge itself and where it is located but if you guys have any ideas that would help me out i would greatly appreciate it this is the last hurdle i have to get over before the car is able to be drivin daily. Thanks guys.

BTW, 220 isn't gonna blow your engine/HG. Its not normal, but its not gonna hurt it beyond all repair either.

get a shourd or get a colder t stat i dont have a problem i got a 160 and it dont go above 180 and i dont have a shroud on
i have no fan shroud and my car NEVER overheats. im using one electric 14in fan. and it stays cool as can be. idleing or not. 100 degree weather or not. and i had the stock fan on it b4. without shroud and never everheated.

i switched to electric cause my fan clutch was bad and i was LOW on cash to replace it. and i had the fan and relay and wire just laying around. and im not giving someone advice to do this cause it prob. aint smart but i was just saying my car doesnt overheat and never has without the fan shroud.

^and you most likely won't. Its not ok if he's so worried about running into the 220's. I've run without one a long time as well but im also running a large Rad for extra cooling capacity on hot days. I've seen my temp fluctuate into the 230's and beyond even with a 500 dollar Fluidyne. This hasn't happened since the larger Rad that replaced it but its a temp easily reached and you will NEVER know because the stock temp gauge is about as accurate as a blind man trying to find waldo!

You do realize that if you use e-fans that the factory fan shroud is pointless right? Hence you not having the factory shroud has no effect on your fans performance... Now for anyone using the factory engine driven fan, the fan shroud is a very good idea if they want the car to cool well when it is sitting still.
