so yesterday i went for a little drive in the mountain at one point i had to pass someone who was going too slow so i shifted down and floored it to pass them on the small straight thats when i noticed the smell of something burning ( thought it was my exhaust since i dont have a shiftboot the fumes tend to come in from there) boot didnt notice any coolant light or cloud of smoke and the smell went away quickly. later when i was back in the city i noticed the temp bobbing up and down from 1/2 to 3/4 i parked the car and let it cool for a bit then i checked it it was empty and it had spit out from the overflow. i have only seen this happen twice ( both on my other car) once because the resovoir cap had a bad seal and was not holding the pressure and the other time when the belt tensioner snapped and nothing was driving the water pump. what would cause the spitting of coolant from the overflow in mk3's?

i hope so i was pushing it pretty hard up the mountain. and after i refilled the coolant it ran fine on the way home

It takes a lot to get a 7m to overheat with everything working correctly, at least in my experience. Just keep an eye on the levels/temps and let's hope you don't have BHG from it overheating. GL

is there any way i can tell if it was the thermastat that is bad and not opening properly?

Pull it out and hang it in a pot of water on the stove and bring to a boil, if you have a candy thermometer even better you can get an accurate opening temp.

alright so burped it then rubberband a papertowel to the overflow nossle to see if it spits again then drove it for an hr and it was all good no spikes no spills nothing stayed at half the whole time. i think my heater core had a huge air pocket that came up when i was going up the steep will cus now wen i turn on the heater it doesnt eat up coolant so hopefully that was it put i guess time will tell

It'll be stamped on the T STat body.

would coolant change color if you have bhg?

Depends if the blocks internal structure isn't full of crap. SM Member Lithium has a build thread where he does coolant flushes & the coolant comes brown or some color like that.

lol its so strange no giant white cloud from the exhaust, no gunk under the oil cap, no milkshake dipstick. so imma change the radiator cap and get a block tester this weekend hoping its the cap not holding the pressure. oh i forgot to mention the overflow spit again last night but this time there was no flux in temp it could have just been my fault i filled the overflow abit over make
