hey guys, im a newb

have had my 88' turbo for about 8 months now. I recently got in a minor accident, tryin to drift, no. 1 lower suspension arm. Anyway, before i got in the accident i started to hear a strang noise coming from the motor...to me it sounds like its coming from the top of the motor. My friend who does alot with supras said that it was rod knock. Now i did not see any metal in the oil the last time that i changed it. Ive talked to a couple of mechanics who said that if it was rod knock, that i would know it. Car runs clean as anything, no smoke, nothing. i had a front oil seal leak when i got the car, and i put some Bars Stop Leak in it and it has stopped the leak. I wanted to do that in case it was the rods knocking just to try to buy me some time if it is. Running much better oil pressure now. To me it sounds like it could be a valve or a lifter...idk:nono:. The noise starts to be noticable at about 2000 rpm all the way to 3300 but by then the motor just drowns out the noise. Could it possibly be the water pump. When the car idles it blows cold air and the temp starts to rise. When i start driving though the temp drops down to normal and i get heat from the vents. I dont think its a thermostat, the coolant level is good, i have not burped the system yet.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated, i just want input from another source and this is the perfect place to do it.

PS. if anyone has some coil packs with wires that they wanna sell, get a hold of me. Mine are starting to go.
Thanks guys,
Jayson

if you even think its rod knock dont drive it period your gonna ruin the motor for rebuild intentions or cause alot more work for yourself.

The noise you hear is definitely not from the water pump or valve/lifter. It sounds like a mild case of a spun rod bearing. This problem will only get worse.

I had the same problem with my '89T. The noise sounded like a cam follower or valvetrain noise. The car ran fine aside from the faint tapping noise so I was not that concerned (I have had a couple of V8 engines that had let a rod bearing go and the noise from the 7MGTE was no where near as bad). Finally I had to check it out and removed the head to find that it was fine, but when I rotated the crank (with the head removed) the No. 1 rod was loose on the crank (I could bump the piston down with a soft mallet when the piston was a little past TDC). When I removed the oil pan I could see that there was considerable damage to the No. 1 rod bearing (and I trashed my crank and No. 1 rod because I kept driving on it instead of checking it out when the noise first appeared). Save yourself some money and check into it before you do more damage by continuing to drive it.
