This is not for me. Buddy (also a member on here) is stranded and he's telling me his starter turns over by itself.

Its a 91 Auto 7MGTE.

He rewired his car to be push start over a year ago. I asked him to check that and he said everything is fine. According to him the starter just keeps turning over by itself and the only way to stop it is by disconecting the battery :1zhelp::1zhelp:

If you know anything please post up quick, or preferably shoot a text message or call him (shane) at 304-692-8087, my phone is broken (anyone have an old Verizon phone they don't want??? I need it!). I'm on my way over there now to help out with what I can.

Sounds to me like his push start switch needs closer inspection. I woul pull the switch. Not sure how many leads he has feeding into it, but I am certain since he did it that he knows where each lead goes to.

If he disconected one lead and the starter stopped spinning, then you have your answer.

The solenoid contacts inside the starter are most likely stuck, or have welded themselves together.
Buy a new starter.

Hey, this is the guy with the problem. The push button start has been removed for some time now, so that's not an issue. I disconnected the small wire and it still turns over. this leads me to believe it's the solenoid contacs as mentioned above. Tried the old "Hit it really hard" meathod with no success. So now I'm going to try putting another starter on. It's so hard to get to that thing though, may drop the motor out for more room. If anyone has any other ideas, they would be much appriciated as I would rather knock out all the easy possibilities before I dig into this thing and change the starter. thanks

Made it home. Turned the ignition on, touched the starter wire to the battery terminal and hit the road. heard the starter rattling around for a while, but the noise went away about half way home. So it either got knocked back in or I just shredded the damn thing and I have a whole new mess on my hands. I guess I'll know when I pull the thing.

How sure are you that your starter wire that you ran isn't grounding out? I don't know how you wired it up, so that's the first place I'd check.

Didn't run a starter wire, stock wire to the battery is what I'm talking about.

Update: Touched the starter wire to the battery (Just as I did in the parking lot) and it didn't crank by itself. I'm gonna hook it up and re attatch the ignition wire and see if it opperates normaly. Still think I'm gonna replace that thing though even if it works. I don't need this crap in the future. back with news soon.

A wobble-joint and 36 inches of extensions is what I've always used. But I'm lucky, I have a 92 so I don't have the nuts on the back of the bolts. They thread right into the bellhousing.

^^^ Yeah. On my 91 the bolts come from the back of the car through the bell housing and thread into the starter. Is that what you're talking about? cuz just looking at it, seems like it's gonna be much harder that way.
