I'm leaving for the navy in a couple weeks and I will not be bringing my car with me. The car will be sitting for at least 4 years and I will only be home about 30 days a year.

Should I keep it driveable and drive it only a couple times a year or should I do something to it? If I should do something to it, what?

ask somsone whos near it/has access to it to start it up and idle it for about 10 minutes about once a month.. thatl help keep the fluids circulated somewhat frequently. gas stabilizer in the tank, and when you get back do some routine maintenance should be good

Ok so far....

gas stabilizer,
get it started 1ce in a while by my dad,
and a car cover...

I'm taking the car off insurance (which means I will not be able to drive it in NJ). Since I won't be able to drive it for 4 years, should I put it on blocks?

I come from a land down under
K get it up off the ground then!

Would be better if your dad could drive it once a month long enough to get it all to operating temps, just running it isn't enough as it causes condensation.

Man having a car sit is one of the worst things you can do to a car 8-(.

But mothballing it properly would be a good idea. (stuff listed above)

(jackstands to get it off the ground)

AND PUT MOUSE TRAPS IN THE CAR AND UNDER THE HOOD AND HAVE YOUR
DAD CHECK THEM ONCE A MONTH (I've lost two stored cars underhood and
interior carpets to this YUCK!)

i bought my car after 4 years of sitting... It sucks man.. dont do it... give it to someone who can take care of it while your gone. Replacing shit suck when if someone drove it, it would have been fine...

Change the engine oil right before you park it. Combustion byproducts that end up in the oil can be corrosive over time and fresh oil will keep that down to a minimum. Oil has corrosion-inhibitors in it that get used up. Same goes for the coolant. Fresh coolant would be good.

Some gas dryer would be good, and expect to get new gas before you go too far. I'm not sure if you should leave the tank almost empty or full. Probably almost empty.

Remove the battery and expect to buy another one unless you have a good maintainer, NOT a trickle charger.

If possible, put it on jack stands to get it off the tires. Put covers on the tires intended for the purpose to keep them from dry rotting from UV light and ozone. An RV supply will have some. Let out most of the air from the tires.

If possible, I'd keep the windows open a bit to keep the air inside from getting stale. A cover would be nice, but not in a windy environment, or the cover will abrade away the wax, then the paint.

Check regularly for rodents living on the engine. They love to chew on the plug wires and stuff, as jtamulis said.

Before restarting, I'd disconnect the coil (but let it spark to the block) and crank the engine for 30 seconds to get the oil flowing.

I had bought the car a year ago after it had been sitting for 5 years. I think it can handle waiting again.

I'm not selling it (unless someone wants it for $5k).

One more question, where should I get a cover for the supra? Do universal car covers from Strauss or NAPA fit?

i dont know about where you guys live, but car covers ive seen in england are pretty crap. A mate of mine had his 1jzgte covered with one and i called round and said ill bet the car is soaking wet under there. It was. he then removed it.

id say like the others have said but dont start it and let it idle just leave it be
