STILL Unsolved Emissions Issue

Hey there folks,

If you don't want the entire rundown, even though I feel it all important information, jump down to the last paragraph.

So my time for emissions is coming close, and I'm tired of cheating my way through by leaning out at the AFM before testing in HOPES that I cranked it back enough. It jumped from about a 1/4 turn to 3/4 turn last year, and ended up just BARELY passing, limit 1.20 CO and she landed there on the spot. Interesting considering my first run passed like a charm 4 years ago after buying the car with blown head gasket and only replacing it.

I've come to a sudden realization in the past week, and would like to get some insight if possible. I've changed plugs/wires/distributor, manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets, cleaned entire intake, scoped around for vacuum leaks, new O2 sensors, new timing belt (which was trash), fiddled with valve lash, TPS, new AFM, tested fuel pressure regulator/injectors (not sure about importance of damper, but diaphragm is definitely shot...thoughts?), and set the...wait a minute...the timing.

I never put much thought into it, but every time that I've set the timing (maybe 30 times in 3 years), I've never noticed any reason whatsoever to jump Te1 and e1. It doesn't change a thing, jumper or no jumper. The computer isn't doing any compensation! Explains the shudder I'm getting from time to time.... So my thoughts are knock sensor, however, I'm not tripping any codes after resetting the ECU and doing timing two weeks ago. Come to think of it, I've never gotten code 52.

Long story short, no fault codes, the car isn't in limp mode, diagnostic jumper doesn't do anything for setting the timing, and there isn't any compensation happening. It does like to bounce up and down about 2 degrees on either end, 8*-12*. :nono:

Any knowledge and info is greatly appreciated!

Cat should be great, it was replaced about a month before getting the car. I drove it nice and easy the first year after swapping head gasket, but jumped up to 1.37 CO the very next year.

Alright, so now that I've sat and thought about a lot of the problems I've had with my car over the years...I've realized one very fatal flaw with my ignition system.

During the first year of driving this thing, the distributor shaft ended up shearing in half on a date I had, out of the blue at idle leaving the movie theater. I only know the time period since the girl is now an ex.

The replacement I ended up with is from an 89-92 non-turbo model, only based on that it has the inline type plug, as opposed to the square type. I snipped the wires and adapted it to fit. The big problem with that is the resistance across the coils, most notably "Ne". The normal range is WAY higher than what the 87/88 call for! *slaps forehead*

Will be checking resistances tomorrow to find out if this is absolutely true for the one I have installed, but this is a MAJOR FUBAR.

Still doesn't explain as far as my ignition timing goes, but it's a fantastic start.

Ignition doesn't change your air fuel ratio (CO). A vacuum leak would make you leaner, not richer. An over priced Toyota cat will pass emissions. As will other aftermarket that cost more than $99.

Am I correct in assuming that it would seem like a big cycle of events causing both to be high?

Air coming in, distributor causing poor ignition (just changed today and car is purring like a kitten), O2 sensor picks up excess oxygen and compensates with more fuel, round and round we go.

Forgot to mention that HC was about 275-325, limit is 220.

Thought I'd follow up and post my last year/yesterday's emissions numbers. HC is down to 160s, CO %0.84.

Problem was definitely distributor. Just thought I would post the absolute cause of my emissions, for future records with anyone searching, and potentially the same "repair/upgrade."
