i've now had my supra for 5 months...it was given to me by my friend as an eighteenth birthday gift. it had a serious knock to it...after pulling the motor out, i determined it was the main bearings so i just bought another 7mge from a local junkyard with 30-40 thousand miles on it.. it was from a 91 cressida. I installled it and connected everything i needed. about a week ago, a turned it over with a little starting fluid, and heard a roar! (just headers) it was only for a few seconds until the starting fluid ran out. i tried starting it again and no spark. i tested the coil and got 12 volts. so i just figured i would get some new parts while i was at it....cap rotor sparkplugs, wires.. i tried turning it over again, and nothing...i tested the coil again and got 12 volts, took an ohm meter to it and got little resistance, so the what could be the problem? i noticed there are four wires going from the distributer to the coil...would those have to do with the spark? any help is greatly appreciated.. i havent been able to drive my baby since i got her!!:1zhelp:

It could be anything man. You don't know how long that engine had been sitting. It's probably a miracle that it started with the fluid. When I blew my head gasket. I wouldn't have got the car home if I wouldn't have had starting fluid. Then I had to pop the hood and have my bro keep spraying into it to keep it running long enough to back into the garage.

So in that theory I would say look at your head gasket but I'm not sure. Because of your situation it could be anything.

hmm ok lets see, have you checked all of your fuses?? or checked to see if you have any error codes? you can check them like this:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/TechTips/engine_error_codes.aspx
after you do that I will prob be able to help you a little better if you have any error codes or blown fuses that will help narrow it down a little bit.

hey again, this time on supramania. lol
anyway, you said you werent getting spark so i dont know why it would start with starting fluid.
Anyway, you can check your codes without running the car like i told you earlier. all you have to do is put it in the "on" position with the paper clip in the Diag box jumpering the ones needed.

I find it more likely that the problem is fuel, rather than spark, if it starts with starter fluid and dies as soon as you stop spraying starter fluid, that's a definate fuel symptom.

I'd check fuel pump, maybe somebody can clarify, but there SHOULD be a schraeder valve somewhere on the fuel rail, barring that, unhook the fuel return line coming off of the J-rail and run it into a fuel can, when you turn the key to the "on" position, it should prime the pump and you'll get fuel running to the jerry can. to stop the fuel flow, turn the key off, and leave it sit for a minute while the fuel drains.

If it passes that, then the only other possibility for fuel is injector pulse, which is a tricky thing to diagnose, but very rare for a vehicle to not have.

I'd run that check, it'll only take you a minute.

check your codes! the car doesn't need to be running, just folllow the link I posted above...just make sure the key in in the "on" position.

hmmm, ok, yea, spark is next, thanks for checking the fuel by the way.

code check is in order, probably something is unplugged. You could do the old water spritz under the hood in the dark test too, to see if your post-coil ignition is grounding somewhere.
