Hi,
My steering fluid has been leaking for a while now, and it has recently gotten worse, so much so that i could finally visually see where it was leaking from. I've attached an image of where its leaking from.
According to the service records of the car, the high pressure line and also the power steering return hose have been replaced. (i'm guessing that 'high pressure line' refers onto the forward direction and return obviously refers to the return line).
Questions:
1) I read in the toyota service manual the terms 'PPS' and 'TEMS' and other such terms when reading about steering. I have an 86.5 NA (with power steering, naturally) what type of a rack do i have? Is it PPS TEMS , etc etc? And what range of supras have the same rack as me (aside from the 86.5 NA obviously)
2) Would the area where it is leaking from have its own 'gasket' type of thing that can be replaced, or that metal piece, instead of the whole line?
3) Is the pipe or gasket more likely to be broken than the actual steering rack (which sounds like a much more expensive fix).
4) What size bolt is that in the picture, my 19mm wrench is too small, so whatever it is, i'll have to go buy it. Maybe the bolt is simply loose.
Other issue, which isn't as important, but will eventually deal with once i read up haynes on how to check if my brake pads are gone and how they can be replaced.
The brake pads make squeaking sounds, so i'm guessing they're almost finished, however i've noticed that:
a) compared to a honda accord, the brakes on this thing are terrible, there isn't much 'feel' to it. If i hit the brakes hard really quickly (not entirely slam, but hit it hard) the wheels lock asap, whereas in the accord i get a good healthy jerk of the brake.
b) I only really get decent braking after i have allowed the car to nose dive using very little braking and then i can start applying the brakes a bit more generously, but even then the brakes tend to not give much feedback and lock up relatively easily compared to the honda. I feel somewhat unsafe as i can't really brake in an emergency very quickly.
So is this probably just my pads wearing down, or just are the stock brakes of the supra so bad, or is there something wrong with my brakes?
Also if i were to lower the car, i'd imagine with the stiffer suspension and less 'nose dive' do you think the braking of the car would diminish, as it would lock up much quicker. (as i mentioned, i find if i brake a little first and allow then car to nose dive, then only can i get decent braking).
Disclaimer: It sounds somewhat stupid, but i'm NOT the person who SLAMS on the brakes and find it suprising when the wheels lock. I dont slam on the brakes, but its more of a jab (not fully hit the brake) and then start applying pressure, but even now the wheels lock. Whereas in the accord, i find that i jab it and start squeezing gently but firmly and get very good braking and the wheels dont lock.
Btw, some history on the car, if its helpful. I had to replace the combination valve about 2 months ago because the brakes would be almost non-existent after 10 minutes of driving. (the pedal would start to travel all the way to the floorboard and i'd get no braking)
Thanks a lot, i realize its a long post.
Btw: for those of you who remember, my shifting has gotten a lot better. Probably nowhere close as good as it can be, but it definitely has improved. I still find the 1st and 2nd gear the most annoying due to the issues i had described in the last thread.
