I'm really hoping that you will be able to help me shed some light on a problem I have been having. It started as a mild "hiccup" while driving an 88 turbo supra. Had just bought the car and the problem didn't seem to be such a big deal. It felt as if for a split second the engine would stop or stall while cruising. Talked to previous owner who said that the problem began after getting some bad gas. Problem became more frequent and even got to the point where car sometimes stalled at idle or wouldn't start. Changed fuel filter, shop mechanic insisted I needed a new fuel pump. Changed fuel pump, problem reamained continuing to worsen. Cleaned throttle body, thought problem had gone away, it persisted. Now I suspected the MAF may be bad, as problem seemed to go away for a few days after cleaning throttlebody. Replaced MAf with used one on Ebay, problem persists. Some guy that says he knows about these cars says that my TPS checks out, but I'm not really sure he knows what he is talking about. Now the car starts bucking or stalling during acccelaration at about 2500-3000 rpm. Check engine light is on, check engine has always been on though, even when car ran much better. I am getting a code 52 for the knock sensor. Have gone over some of the wire harness looks ok so far. I know the knock sensor retards the timing but can it cause such a dramatic drivibility problem? The car actually starts to buck @ 2-2500 rpms, until you let off the gas. If you punch it and it gets past 3k, all is good. Additionally, after resetting the ecu, it was doing this with no check engine light on. This thing is driving me nuts. Off the subject, I have one other question, one day I shut the car off and when I started it again my speedo didn't work. Everything else on dash is fine, just the speedo. Any body seen this before?

When you move your car and the speedo does not work then that's your speedo cable most likely.

You need to access the TSRM and read how to get the codes. Do you have a Super Monitor? If you do then it will be very easy. If not then you have to count the Check Engine Light blinks.

Link to online manual that will help you read codes:

Do not replace any more parts until you check them. That will save you money. Get a multimeter from Sears/Lowes/similar store and you can follow how to check if a part is good or not. The manual will lead you step by step and show you the specs. For example, I received code 31 = AFM or CPU. Well I used a multimeter and found out that the TWO black electronic AFM boxes I had were both bad. I tried each one and was receiving code 31. I replaced the electronics and no codes now. I get "ENG - OK " on my Super Monitor now.

Like they said get the codes posted up and do not buy any more parts. Rarely do you see a supra with serious fuel problems so it is probably something else that will be revealed in your engine codes.

Open the hood and locate the diagnostic connector. Is it next to the battery. You will want to connect terminals E1 and TE1. I used a big paper clip, which I leave in the back of my car, and it is actually 'sprung' against the connector lid to add some pressure for a better connection.

Diagnostic Block Terminals
After you do this start your car. The check engine light should now be blinking. If it is continuos quick blinking then you are fine there are no error codes, otherwise you have to count the blinks. Each set of blinks will represent one digit with a longer pause to separate digits. There may be more than one code present, but it is on a continuos loop. For example if you saw blink...blink.......blink...blink...blink...blink....... that would be a code 24. After you are done you can clear the codes by pulling the EFI fuse (15A) in the fuse block right next to the diagnostic connector for 30 seconds or more, make sure the engine is off.

52 Knock Sensor Signal

Diagnosis

* Open or short circuit in knock sensor signal.

Trouble Area

* Knock sensor circuit
* Knock sensor
* ECU

Have you done a wiggle test on your wires? I kinda had the same problem and it turned out I was getting high resistance from some of the wires being exosed on my CPS(stupid previouse owner). Fix your code as well.
