Spray Painting the moldings?

I'm not really feeling the gray molding that came on my car as standard. I think the car would look a lot better if they were black like the rest of the car.

Could I possibly get away with using a couple of cans of spray paint and doing them myself?

If this is a seriously retarded idea, I'll wait a bit and get the bodyshop to do it when I go to get the rest of the bodywork touched up.

Alright, thanks

Josh

i did mine with spray paint it actually turned out really good... but you gata know how to do it...

Have you got any pictures?

Did they even do solid black moldings on the preface lift? I've only seen them on 89+ cars

On a similar note, Can I use 89+ moldings on my preface lift? I'm guessing not because I've heard before the front fenders are slightly different.

Thanks

Josh

Yes. A very good upgrade, I would say.

pre-89 mouldings look poopy. If you're gonna bother with your mouldings, upgrade to 89+ ones if you decide to rattle can or not.

Oh neat. I never even knew there was even a difference between the two visually, other than the colors that they came in?

I spray painted mine. First i sanded them all with 600 grit sand paper. Make sure you sand until they are no longer shiney. After that, get some sort of Plastic Prep. Spray them down and wipe it off. This makes sure there is no shit on them that will make the paint not stick. Then get some Exterior trim paint. Where I got mine you could get a wide variety of colors, i went with metallic charcoal. You can get gloss black. Give them 4-5 light coats, look at them under a light to make sure you got them all evenly. Then your good to go! Also if you want, you can clear coat them.:icon_bigg

Pre-89 cars never came with black mouldings, and yes you can use 89+ mouldings on a pre-89 car...but the rear moulding below the license plate won't match if you don't switch to 89+ tails.

I'd be sourcing my mouldings from a Euro car. We never got the 89+ tails, which leads me to wonder if we ever got the newer mouldings at all.

Pretty sure you guys did.

After a bit of research, I think can confirm this (at least going from the examples I've found)

89+ Mouldings really do blow mine out of the water

That leads me to yet another question.

If euro cars got a special design of mouldings to prevent the problem johnathan was talking about, doesn't that mean that I might run into problems when I install JDM/US 89+ tails?

Err, I think you just have pre89 tails for all years but the moulding under the middle section is updated 89+ style. If you got the updated mouldings, it should be the same all the way around including the taillight piece.

But I'm not an expert on euro Supra models/trims/options so don't quote me on that.

Yes, that makes sense...I just wonder if the 89+ moulding is removable on the euro cars like the pre-89 one is...(on the USDM 89+ lights, the moulding cannot be removed)

You'd probably have to get an 89+ center section if that's the case.

Using a rattle can is not a good idea. The paint will not last. There is a difference between automotive paint and Krylon and there is a reason why one is more expensive than the other.

I would also recoment having a shop do it.

But...if you are on a budget, and you want it to last and look decent....get some plastic prep and clean all the moldings, sand them a bit with 400 grit sand paper, then clean them again. Go to the auto parts store and look for black bumper and trim paint. It is made to stick to plastic and rubber trim and it more flexable then normal spray paint. Do many light coats instead of trying to fully cover it all at once. Also make sure you tape off and use newspaper to protect the rest of the car from overspray.
