We have a clutch type lsd. All lsd's perform the same task no matter what car they are on. In a high hp car you will get a lot more wheelspin in a car that has an open differential (since it will send all the power to the wheel with the least amt of traction), so its main benifit is to allow you to put the power your making down to the ground much more efficiently. It also makes the handling on the car much more predictable when trying to put the power down in a turn. Here is a direct quote taken from howstuffworks.com about clutch type lsd's and how they work.

"This type of LSD has all of the same components as an open differential, but it adds a spring pack and a set of clutches. Some of these have a cone clutch that is just like the synchronizers in a manual transmission.

The spring pack pushes the side gears against the clutches, which are attached to the cage. Both side gears spin with the cage when both wheels are moving at the same speed, and the clutches aren't really needed -- the only time the clutches step in is when something happens to make one wheel spin faster than the other, as in a turn. The clutches fight this behavior, wanting both wheels to go the same speed. If one wheel wants to spin faster than the other, it must first overpower the clutch. The stiffness of the springs combined with the friction of the clutch determine how much torque it takes to overpower it.

Getting back to the situation in which one drive wheel is on the ice and the other one has good traction: With this limited slip differential, even though the wheel on the ice is not able to transmit much torque to the ground, the other wheel will still get the torque it needs to move. The torque supplied to the wheel not on the ice is equal to the amount of torque it takes to overpower the clutches. The result is that you can move forward, although still not with the full power of your car."

You know now that i think about it there is one small downside to having a lsd in the car. When taking corners at low speeds in the rain, like coming out of a parking lot to merge into traffic, the rear of the car WILL get sideways if you arent careful. But if you arent going too fast, which you shouldnt be doing in the rain anyway, its pretty easy to correct and keep it movin'. I personally kind of like it, but you can bet your ass it will make some of your passengers go :aigo: :1zhelp:

haha, i got sideways in the rain when i first got my NA, i thought something was wrong with it...:nono: I was making a right at an intersection, and it totally fishtailed like 15 ft...It scared the hell out of me and my little brother too! lol

I get that stuff when it's dry. I don't even need a puddle. It's all in how you drive your car. These cars didn't need a turbo, Or atleast mine doesn't. It has that low geared rear end underneath it. It's just right for street racing.

It is kind of hard to explain on the internet. A visual demonstration is better.

A differential will apply equal torque to both wheels. Not speed, torque. Those gears inside, the side gears, or spider gears, will rotate around. The clutch assembly stops the rotation. Think of having a tire on ice. Ice has a very low coefficient of friction. You can probably rotate that tire with only 10 lb/ft of torque. So, with both sides having equal torque, the side on the road will not move. You need more than 10 lb/ft to push the car forward. So the tire on ice just spins. The LSD applies uneven torque to the wheels. When those clutches hold the side gears, the whole unit rolls over, isntead of the side gears, which are splined to the axle.

I only read the first sentence or so. It isnt speed, it is torque.

same here, really fun but scared me 3/4 to death. then i got over it and put it sideways a few more times to get the hang of it

You don't need a sports package for the LSD.

Ya, are you sure you don't have one? Just because you dont have the sport package doesnt mean you dont have an lsd. I have the headlight washers and an lsd, but no tems or targa top, so no sport package. I love my LSD :biglaugh:

all ive got is the lsd. no washers, no targa, no tems. damn. but my lsd makes up for all of it.

would it be a bad idea to couple the 4.3 with a turbo?
