It doesn't work at all. I can't find anything in my lousey Hanes manual about the speedometer. Does anyone have an idea as to where to start looking for the problem. Is it a cable type or wire?

The speedo cable starts at the back of the transmission and then runs up behind the engine and ito the firewall. Im sure its a cable type. The cable is also divided up into two sections.

it's actually 3 sections. when i replaced my gauges i broke a little piece of the section behind the dash. the car would not shift out of first gear (auto tranny) and the speedo did not move.

when i replaced it, it worked fine.

Best thing is to remove both sections and see which one is broke. Normally it is the upper section which runs next to the downpipe.
I'm just curious, did you purchase you supra in a dismantled state?

He lied.

Part # 83710-14800 $9.26 lower cable
Part # 83710-14730 $31.34 pre-89 upper cable
Part # 83710-14731 $68.64 post 89 upper cable
I think the difference between the last two is a revision in 1989 to keep it from getting roasted by the downpipe. Consequently, the cheap upper cable is probably out of production and replaced by the expensive one.

My oldest son had driven it and it had a head gasket problem. Also a possible knock. Before the problems showed up, He had the turbo somehow enlarged and put 3" exhaust on it. He disassembled it down to almost having the head off back in 1999 and gave up. He bought a motor from Japan but it wasn't as good as they said it would be. When he was moving to a new house he wanted to get it out of his garage so he offered it to my second son (who is a crack mechanic and engineer for chrysler, also winner of the 2006 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge) for 1k. He took it to his place and decided he didn't need such a big puzzle to work on. My son gave it to me as long as he gets first dibbs if I ever sell it. I thought about pulling the whole works and doing the bottom end too, but thought maybe the easy way out was to get a rebuilt head. I am wondering if that was such a good idea as I get this light knock at a float (not under acceleration) which starts around 2500 to 3000 rpms.
