Spark plugs, I'm stuck :(

I went yesterday to get the new spark plugs for my car. I followed instructions just like I found on the search here: copper tipped (not gonna stay stock), NGK or Densos, with 4 sparks. Problem is that I can't find any shop (will be trying a speed shop today) that sells them. They only have Bosch's (I know, I won't buy them at all) and single spark Denso's/NGK's. My question is, IF I honestly can't find NGK/Denso quad-spark, copper tipped plugs, what would my next option be?

if toyota plugs are platinum....... then that'd be a bad choice..... right? at least that's what every other post claims.

As for the Autolites, I remember reading something about them recently right here in this forum, and it wasn't exactly positive nor negative. So I've got no opinion about them (aside from the fact that I doubt I'll find them locally).

Autolite 3923 - My choice of Spark.

There is one issue with the Autolites...they are about an 1/8" shorter than the stock spec plugs. This can cause a bad contact with the wires that results in arcing. It did exactly that on mine causing a slight misfire...it was most pronounced at idle. This was with MSD wires....it seem certain brand wires cause this more so than others.

John - Yeah...I read that somewhere. I've yet to have a problem with that though, so I'm thankful! Other than the off-fitment causing arcing, the performance of them, themselves, is 10 out of 10. :)

I really don't feel like spending that much $$ regarding the plugs (talking about the iridiums).

With the stock wires, has anyone using the Autolites had any problems?

I wouldn't recommend Bosch plugs on our cars. The extra tip that yours has just gets in the way and doesn't provide a full burn of the fuel in the combustion chamber like regular spark plugs do. I ran platinum 4's in an old car of mine for a short amount of time. IMHO stick with NGK plugs or a similar one...

fact: toyota plugs are made by "denso" or "ngk" i have never seen stock toyota with bosch plugs, autolite = ford/domestic plugs, for imports i would stick with NGK or Denso that's just my 2 cents, i have seen to many import cars with missfire problem caused by bosch plugs and the double tip plugs stands for duble misfire,

yep!!

that is because they are for the MKIV which uses an ISO height (50.5mm/1.98")and the MKIII uses a JIS height (53mm/2.086"). That height difference is critical and might be the cause for alot of folks erratic idle ;)

I've been using Autolite 3923's for about 2 years now. Definitely a great plug, and for 1.48 a plug you can't complain too much. If anything, they have to be replaced a lot sooner. From what I've been reading and people that I've talked to, the Iridium IX's provide the same power and performance that the 3923 does but with triple the life. I'll be buying these on my next tune up and finding out first hand. As for the price of Iridiums.........so what. You spend a little more money, but you're not going to the parts store all the time and you're getting a reliable plug. Besides, read your reciept.....you've got a warranty on them. Whenever they go out, swap them out.
