What do you all think of Southbend clutches for the R154? I'll be running ~450rwhp with a R154 transmission and was considering Southbend or a Spec Stage 3+ superclamp.

Spec Stage 3+ is a carbon metallic:

I have an OFE with roughly the same HP goals. Problem is, the tranny is in the garage and the motor is on the stand, so I can't tell you how it works yet.

In talking with Andy @sbc, he reccomended the the OFE over the others based on my goals (should hold over 500ftlbs). but then again, I don't plan on dragging at all - all driving habits need to be taken into consideration.

good luck

I have the spec stage 3+ it drives really nice.. seems to hold up well.. cept for 1 time (not sure what happened).. I was going through the gears and hit 3rd and it slipped? it wasn't the tires as the speedo was only like 75ish.. tried again right afterwards and it grabbed hard and shot the back end out.. Next sunday the 6th going to the track and see how well it holds coming out on radials.. I say i'm running 370-380whp now (latest trap was 113).. gotta add some timing in and bump it up to the 400-430 i should be at..

After more talk with my tuner, apparentlyl 550rwhp is what he expects on high boost with my car, so I need a good clutch that can handle 550rwtq daily driven. I need to get something today, what should I get that's ~$550 or less? :icon_surp

550 rwtq daily?? what are you doing a smoke show? ;)

short of drag radials no tire is going to grip at that power level. Especially for the 7m since the torque comes in low in the band.

With that said.

I run DXD-F without any issues.

I'm over-estimating a little just to be safe, since I don't want a clutch that will slip. High boost is 25psi (meth injection) which is ~500-550rwhp will be used when occassion calls for it, most of the time I'll be at ~450rwhp on pump gas. But, changing the clutch in a garage with sub-par tools is a PITA so I only want to do it once. The southbend appears to make better quality clutches compared to Spec, but I wanted a sprung 6 puck so I can change gears faster....then I read this:

http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=422472

RPS clutches are not an option (bad personal experience). But it seems like every other clutch company out there has good AND bad stories I dunno which to get now! With that said, which Southbend clutch kit (that is daily driver friendly) but with 6-puck sprung disc do you recommend Figgie? Thank you everyone for your input!

well 6 p[uck is over rated. Right material and right pressure plate account for most of the grip. Full face as it won't chatter as much. Material wise. If you are not going to drag race, rferamic. If you are, forgo fermaic for other composites.

Am I correct to think that racing with a Feramic based clutch disc will wear out the flywheel too fast?

I've got a stage 3+ spec , but havn't had a chance to use it yet. I'm sticking around to see what other people have to say about it. it's supposed to hold 700 ft/lbs BTW

Dallas what PP plate are you using the...SPEC PP.
From what i have heard it doesn't go to 700ft/lbs TQ. From what Ive researched people dont get to the Tq that was suggested usually 30-40 below the suggested amount and this is for all the spec clutches 1-5.
If your change the PP it might. Maybe an ACT PP just my opinion.

I may get a lightened act pp later on. But i won't need that for a good while. Not until I get another motor.

nevermind. If it's slipping on 420ish whp... I may be in trouble.

O, and I was 80 ft/lbs off.

it can probably hold the torque, but not launching on drag radials..

I dont have any problems with mine slipping going down the track, just trying to launch, it doesn't grab, I have to throttle then it grips..

I reved to ~ 5500, slipped it till I was going ~ 5-10 mph and dropped the clutch.. rpms rose to 6500.. but i wasn't spinning, pedal was fully engauged, clutch was spinning, throttled.. and clutch grabbed and was off.. didn't anywhere but that..

well it sounds like Southbend is the way to go as this is not the first time I've heard of the Spec slipping at lower-than-rated torque levels. Went with sprung 6 puck instead and it uses thier 2500lb pressure plate :naughty: . thanks for that info about refacing though figgie. Southbend stage 5 pics:
