Soup caught fire.

Literally. I was at WOT doing a little pull with a friend of mine in his GLI. I noticed some smoke, so i let off quick and stopped, only to see ALOT of it. I popped the hood real quick and i caught burning oil, and plastic. My CPS sensor was ablaze, and i have oil all over the top of my head, and a cone shaped spray mark on my hood where i'm guessing the gasket (CPS?) blew out. The fire didn't have time to do much damage other than toasting the CPS and crisping some of my wire loom near my thermostat sensor. I figured that was where the smoke was coming from (duh), so i was a little mystified when i saw smoke roiling up from behind the motor. "Oil burning off the downpipe" i thought, but no. It looks like it was coming from below my tranny, and when i looked under my car? Sure enough, coolant dripping.

Soooooo, other than the obvious CPS clusterfuck i have to deal with, any ideas on where the coolant came from? I know it's next to impossible to diagnose without pics, so i'll post some as soon as possible. I know there is a coolant hose at the rear of the head, but it didn't look blown. Cracked head/block/headgasket? I don't know :/. Is there anything back there that wouls be leaking coolant?

Coolant pressure test?

If the cps was the culprit which it sounds like and since you were at wot, The oil would have sprayed on a 1300+ degree turbo.

If the cps was on fire id start at looking at the L hose below it.

Honestly, of all the fluid fires I've seen on supras in junkyards, it's source was always from the power steering system leaking. Rest were electrical.

CPS isn't under oil pressure and oil drains out of the head faster than that, it's not going to spray like the power steering system will (high pressure hose leak + high RPM = one hell of a mess)

If it was the high pressure line it could have sprayed anywhere. And if it has power steering fluid and not atf it would look like motor oil.

My PS system has been leaking recently, actually...

Whatever blew up top was definately oil, though.

Power steering leak catches fire and causes other leaks. Think a fuse on a firecracker, the fuse isn't the thing that actually does the damage, but it starts it ;)

The line has been leaking for a while now, and i have always used Dex3 in the reservior. I can't see it blowing now. i feel like pictures would explain this better. It is most definately, ASSUREDLY oil.

Let's see...

Coolant lines to turbo
Elbow of death on the back of the motor
Main heater lines
Coolant hard line under exhaust manifold

No i haven't, but the car is outside. I can run out and look real fast. The only things i checked were the oil cap and rad cap, because when i see oil and coolant at the sme time it makes my head explode and all i can think is "Oh great, another $500/month off the road."

No, whats the elbow of death, smartass.

Already changed the one under the PS res. I almost broke my hand doing it, but i got it on there. i'm trying to think of he one at the back of the head... on top in the center? No, hats the heater hose, right?

No its right behind the exhaust manifold. My post had question marks no need for name calling. Dont be a dick. And just you dont ask and call names checking oils and finding 1 low would tell you what oil it was.

Edit. fyi Those L shaped heater hoses are 10x easier if you use toyota hoses. Parts store ones are smaller. I just did both with 1 of each.

Furthermore, the one under the power steering reservoir tends to die rapidly if your cam position sensor leaks oil on it all the time. Dies even faster when your heat shields are missing AND your CPS leaks oil on it all the time.

I just got the motivation to go take a look at the car for a little. My PS res is low, but the fluid is still bright red. My radiator is completely full, and the coolant is bright green with no deposits or visable contamination. I checked the oil cap last night and it didn't show anything milky (Thank God). My oil is EXTREEEEMELY dirty though. It's crazy dark and it smells a little burnt. My queston is this: If i could SEE coolant leaking last night, and there is a small (maybe 8"x8") puddle of coolant under my car, why is there no loss of coolant in the rad? Could i have a blockage somewhere? My car hasn't overheated since i rebuilt it, even last night when it was on fire. lol
I'm still stumped as to what blew. Freeze plugs maybe? I checked the 90* "Death elbow" at the back of my head. It isn't wet, there is no moisture near the top back of the head, and the hoses all seem firmly attatched.

pinhole leak in a coolant hose somewhere, only leaks vry small amt when hot, when it cools down the hole closes up and the cooling system refills from res.
check oil press sender for leakage
