So Im trying to buy a 5 speed 87 turbo, but the seller doesnt have any paperwork for it, and the mechanic he got it from said he lost any lien sale papers he had for it.
Does anybody know the laws in California for buying/transfering a vehicle to your name when all you have is the licence plate and Vehicle Identification Number but no Title.

And no I havent given him a penny.

Has anybody been through this situation?

well the odometer only reads 92k. All it seems to need is a battery, new seats n steering wheel, couple new tires, intercooler, and headgasket replaced. might need to also check the bearings tho.
But I also noticed some water in the hatch under the spare tire.....:icon_conf

cerel killer, this more than you mentioned, gezz at this point, I'd recommend the "90" car or pass altogether, don't know thought, I haven't seen either car, or do as I've sugested get both,....the parts that "Mark4me" mentioned will far excede 1400 dollars for the ninety. ( I feel). I'd offer less for the "90". I mean you could use the seats, steering box, rear end from that ninety, right there would would almost cost you the price of the ninety.

this sounds familiar to what happened when my gf bought her car.....the person we bought it from bought the car out of auction/towing company with the "lien sale"...when we went to the dmv to try to get it registered in her name the D.M.V lady said we need the "bill of sale" from the guy she bought the car from which we did of course...but ALSO the bill of sale from the towing company to the last owner....so we emailed the towing company and the previous owner if we could please get a bill of sale from you "towing company to last owner"...the towing company said that they can only do buisness with the people who buy there cars...and as for the last owner he doesnt reply to my emails or pickup his phone. So we are pretty much not gunna be able to go farther on the registration....i hope that helps a little

I'm in a very similar situation. My uncle gave me a CJ7. Problem is that when he bought it, he never did the DMV stuff so the car is still under the previous owner to my uncle. Not that big of an issue but still a hassle. Here's the kicker (this was about a decade ago), the previous owner was going through citizenship paperwork and doesn't remember what name he used on the title/registration. DMV won't tell me anything, spoke to cops and no one will run anything. I don't want to look stupid trying to put the car into my name so I'm just kind of waiting to see if someone can help me with the situation. The car has not been registered since 2002.

My suggestion would be not to mess with that Supra unless you can verify that it is clean and obtain a bill of sale. Get the VIN and have DMV look it up. They won't tell you who the owner is but will tell you if it is a legit car.

Many years ago I bought a car that "needed work" from a guy that bought it from a guy that was given to him by a guy etc. etc.. When I went to the DMV in San Clemente the lady said I needed a bill of sale from each of those prior owners! She handed me about 5 forms and said have a nice day. I walked over to the counter at the back of the DMV filled them all in signed them and then returned to a different clerk. She didn't even bat an eye. finished the paper work took my money and I walked out of there with a valid registration and plates.

Turns out I gotta get a bill of sale from the person its registered under, which was at least 3 owners ago. And I have no idea who that is, let alone where to find him. The DMV gave me a form to fill out for each person lol. Even if I find the registered owner, I then have to give it 30 days to make sure they dont want the car back (like they'll say no).
Im thinkin screw it. Its going to be way too much hassle and I dont wanna go thru everything only to find out in the end it cant be done.
That pearl white paint sure was nice tho...

Purely out of principle, I wouldn't reccomend posting this sort of stuff on the internet, especially in a section thats viewable to the public. What you did worked for you, but it is very illegal. If you're gonna do it anyways, fine, I'm not telling you how to live your life, but I wouldn't admit to doing so on a public forum, let alone reccomend that another member attempt the same.

I would explain to him(the seller) that this problem will always be a hassle to anyone that wants this car, tell him that if he wants to unload the car he'll have to sell it a lot cheaper (at a "give a way price") to get it outta his "Hair" other wise he'll never get rid of it. then go to the D.M.V. and tell them there's no title. I could be wrong on this. Ask the d.m.v about no title procudure.(call them) remain anonymous or go to another branch.
Maybe I missed something, you mean the guy selling it isn't the register owner? Couldn't the D.M.V. look up the registered owner and give you contact info? Threee owners ago? how did the other two owners get the car? I guess, Iv'e missed something. There must something that you can do besides all that b.s. maybe your right, .forget it!

Out of principle I agree, however, this was a situation where the "system" left no option and filling the forms out right there was an "in your face" response by an immortal teenager! I had a title for the car just no signed BOS. I t was a long time ago (1970s) and I certainly don't condone such actions. Chalk it up to stupid teenager tricks and "kids, don't try this at home".
