[strike]How is bearing preload achieved? Shims won't do it, they will just change clearance.[/strike]

I just asked a coworker from GM Powertrain (he isn't there anymore). The preload is just coming from the nut, and more and more models will go to it. It is simple and he says it works.

You start with the solid spacer + xx shims then remove shims as required to achieve the correct preload, the shims are under the nut so don't affect pinion depth which is set by the base bearing to pinion spacer shim.

The solide pinion spacer for the 8" diff of a V6 Toyota pickup truck is the same size as the 8" diff for the MK3 Supra?

The toyota trucks used to come with solid spacers back in the late 70's/ early 80's, then they went to the crush sleeves. I actually had a crush sleeve fail in a truck diff with 5.29 gears and big tires. It eventually pulled the pinion further into the diff and just trashed everything in there.

Solid spacers take more time to setup correctly, but are definitely worth it for longevity.

My '82 Toyota Hilux had crush sleeves. And yes, the failures are fun from them

And yes, the V6 truck kit is what you want.

Damn, just bought a rebuild kit from Weir which includes a solid pinion spacer...wish I had seem that on ebay before I bought it.

FWIW, since Weir sneakily doesn't post prices of the rebuild kit on his website, the diff rebuild kit is currently priced at $349 (which includes the solid pinion spacer). I emailed jawsgear asking which of their rebuild kits is correct for our cars and never got a response.
