Hey guys, just thought i would share what I am doing for my final project in my Engineering Graphics Class..... modeling a working 6cyl engine..... It started out as a 7m but has started drifting away quickly as I Just want to complete the project and get a good grade:biglaugh:

The main thing was just to get the thing working, so I know the piston skirts are wrong, the crank is ugly, pistons 2 and 5 are wrong whatever... bla bla bla It is just in rough form right now and im going detail everything and make it look good later.:icon_razz

Movie....... 360 deg/s = 60 rpm

LOL...... 6,000 RPM = overload

You have more patience than I... I tried to make an engine model before in Solid Works and gave up after drawing up a piston/rod assembly and part of the crank for 1 cylinder.

If it was for a project I might have finished...

I made a tubular manifold in Solid Works once for a free choice assignment. Went to the computer lab at 6PM, left at 6AM. No breaks. My brain was fried when I was done. Barely managed to walk back to my dorm.::hang::

I'm in my second year but some take it their first..... I actually like Solid Edge, it has some frustrating faults but its not too bad.

onejoezee: thats Funny as hell..... I haven't really done anything in Solid works, do you like it better?

Never used solid edge. :dunno:

To be honest, I quickly skimmed over the thread title and thought it WAS solid works. The blue background is similar and the x/y/z vertices looks similar too.

What degree are you working on??

I've done nothing but math/physics/chemistry in my Engineering Degree @ SFCC :(

Really? I did intro to engr. and a engr. graphics course in my first year of ME. :dunno:

I just looked at solid works, and they are almost the same, although Solid works looks like it can do a lot more.... determine Stress, Heat, and wear on parts

I'm downloading solid works right now:evil2: .... Im gonna play with it later
look what someone did in solid works..... WOW

^ I wonder how long that took.

That was my original goal, to do that with a 1JZ but I just didn't have enough freetime to devote to taking the thousands of dimensions and the time putting it together. I only made a few parts. I may start again. It's a really fun and challenging thing to do in your freetime. And I have tons of freetime... Would be fun to finish what I started as an extended project with no due date pressures..

Where are you downloading your copy of solid works from? I deleted the student copy I had. :( PM me if you wish. I've been trying to get another copy of SW lately. :)

Mechanical and possibly Aerospace, thats weird if thats all you've done..... i have math and physics but i have MAE classes scattered throughout, What year are you in?

Solidworks is alot better than Solid Edge. Next to Solid works I would choose Autodesk Inventor. Inventor is good because now 3DSMAX is owned by Autodesk so importing Inventor files into 3DSMAX for rendering is so easy.

By far my favourite CAD software is CATIA though. It is the most advanced and complete.

But Solidworks/Inventor are the most commonly used in industry, at least everywhere I have worked at/looked into.

looks good! when you play with solidworks, play around with linear patterns, mirrored bodies, etc. i work with solidworks all day doing naval architecture, building ship interiors, pipe routing, etc. very powerful program, but like alot software, it has its downfalls.

I took engineering design and modeling or something like that freshman year, 1st semester. Played with SOLIDWORKS all day long for quite some time. Cool program, much smaller learning curve than the more advanced CAD programs I'd seen.

I modeled my laptop cuz I was dumb and hadn't started my whole car obsession. Now I'd have tried to model the engine as well.

Throw some chamfer/fillet(?) :dunno: on those crank edges and that'd look much better, IMO. Rounded edges FTW.

I'm such a nerd. I may have to get solidworks up and running just for fun now.... I'm so lucky my g/f doesn't shun me :D

A friend of mine modeled a 20B rotory engine for a rendering course I was in, every nook and cranny was 1:1 with the actual engine.

He worked for a mazda race shop and took a complete 20B and dissassembled it and placed every part on a CMM machine. The machine can save the measurements into a format that can be opened in Autocad, then from there import the data into Inventor, then import it into 3DSMAX for some really cool looking animation. Turned out to be a lot harder than he originally thought it would be. I will try to find some pictures or a video.
