..bad idea?
I haven't noticed any difference. The air doesn't seem to be shootin in any other direction with it off.
Figured there'd be less restriction catching the air and moving it towards the engine.

Yeah, it's generally considered a bad idea. Without the fan shroud the air will circulate around the fan rather than be pulled through the radiator. If you are moving at highway speeds you won't notice a huge difference, as the forward motion for your car can push enough air through the radiator. The difference will come when sitting in traffic. Without the shroud it just spins air around the fan. This can potentially cause the car to overheat depending on your climate, elevation, and how hard you drove the car before slowing down.

holy shit I never thought of that. now that I think of it the car has warmed up a little more now but I thought that was because the water/coolant ratio shifted due to a leak I kept refilling.

standing. I always thought the purpose of the shroud was just for safety reasons so I just left it off when I replaced the water pump.

Another point... what kind of equipment are you using to analyze the effect? If you're relying on the stock temp gauge, you won't find anything - it's built to display the same temp over a very wide range, and only starts to move when you are really overheating or extremely cold.

And while you're at it, replace or make a new engine undercover.

No shroud the fan will pull a fan size circle of air through the radiator, with the shroud it will pull a radiator size square of air through.

definitely, fluid dynamics is something you want on your side for cooling. it would significantly reduce airflow based on the area of your radiator due to air being pulled in from other angles besides the front.

as mentioned that it doesn't shoot air off in any other direction is obvious because it condenses air coming in.

plus it keeps wires, hair, cables and other misc debris from coming into contact with the fan; which has always freaked me out. i've heard too many stories of people getting hair, laces, ties or loose clothing caught!

This thread is a perfect example of what is wrong with the car scene in general, people chop and change things without actually understanding the reason for the parts existance or the repercussions if removed, trust me on this if a car maker can get away without putting a part on they will as over the model lifespan if they can save even $10 per car produced it's a huge deal.

Depending on your hookup, it's less than $100 for a BRAND NEW fan shroud that's not cracked or warped. Shipping them sucks as well because of their size.

Exactly. I have a brand new one that I really should sell, but I'm not looking forward to shipping it - enough that I haven't even listed it. It would probably cost half of the $90 it's worth just to ship it.

I had to take off my fan shroud cause the mounting points were brittle and had already been previously repaired, so I didnt want my fan eating the shroud up. Bought one brand new from the dealer for under $100 - upper shroud, lower piece, and the clips.
