I think csr ma71 was saying that he could go on TV and not care if the views he expressed were received in an unfavorable light. (i.e. that he is secure enough financially to not worry about any possible repercussions.)

Though, did he really get fired for this? This country has really become soulless if somebody is now not permitted to say something compassionate about our soldiers and point out a possible flaw in media coverage for fear of losing their job.

If he did lose job, I think he probably had quite a surprise. I did not find what he said that revolutionary or controversial. I doubt he thought it would have serious consequences.
