So confused. Turbo, pvc system, rings?

FWIW I have smoke on start up and my new Toyota valve seals have approx 5000miles on them. I could have screwed one up or one got damaged. Either way im not looking forward to replacing them in the car.

It sounds like we have a similar problem. I just installed a new set of valve seals and still have smoking on startup. Old valve seals looked perfect when removed, so i don't think the stem seals were the issue. I think my PCV system may be the culprit but not quite sure yet...

carb cleaner and compressed air.

for what its worth, that orifice is only 2-3mm in diameter, so if you think it is clogged because it is difficult to blow through, that may not be the case.

just reading through your thread, it sounds like you either have a major pcv problem, or excessive blowby, or a combination of the two. After a few thousand km, my charge pipes have minimal oil in them...

verify that all pcv hoses are clear and open. also check that the hose connecting the crankcase and head is not plugged or pinched.

also my compassion yester and most of my god tools are at my parents house 1.5 hours away

Damn a compassion tester?! That really is a god tool!

Just messing around... what were your compression numbers wet and dry? Pull a lower intercooler pipe and see if oil drains out. A little oil is normal, but not pools of it.

yeh, i have a hard time typing sometimes. dont remember the specific numbers for each cylinder but i know close. 1 and 3 were the lowest with 154ish and 2, 4, 5, and 6 were 160. pulled intercooler pipe and no oil in it since i replaced the turbo.

adam, i have checked all hoses, except for the large one connecting the case to the head. it is brand new from toyota and looks good from the outside(no kinks) but that doesnt mean it isnt clogged.

maybe i am just paranoid but i had thought that maybe the new hg didnt seal properly and is allowing oil to be pulled through. is that even possible? i would think my compression would be off if that was the case though and it isnt. thanks for all the quick replies btw.

I will be watching this thread with great interest.

I have a similar problem as yours, smoke on decal. Worse when stopping for a red light at the end of a highway, smoke follows like the smoke monster and smells like exhaust. The car behind me actually stopped two car lengths away today so it must be pretty bad. I changed the valve stem seals with no noticable difference, lost a qt of oil may be every 700 miles, top of the a few pistons appear wet after taking a peep into the plug holes after shut off, but I did not see smoke at start up, compression is good across the broad, PCV piping and TB orifice are good. All new rings with a hone during rebuilld. May be the hone was bad or the cylinder is oval, but the compression numbers are good so I am perplexed.

Same thing here with good compression numbers. I have to hook up my PCV system and see since I don't have it hooked up and it helps the rings seal.

I know, dead thread revival but I thought I should give some closure to all of you guys that had input. It has been a long time and I actually parked the car for the last year and stayed off the forums because I couldn't stand not having my car right. Well, a few weeks ago I finally got some motivation and decided I WILL resolve the issue. So, I began dissassembly, again, and set out to do what I should have done in the first place, rebuild it myself. Upon post disassembly inspection I found scored cylnder walls, scored camjournals and a scored oil pump driveshaft bearing. I then moved on to measuring. Found that the motor appeared to have been built too tight and DRY! causing the pistons skirts and cyl walls to score. Still unsure about whether this was the cause of my problems I decided to move on and redo everything anyway. I ordered new pistons and rings, gaskets etc. Found out that the new pistons, while being the "same size" were actually bigger than the other ones. This was good news because I was able to hone the scratches out and get my clearances right. For some reason, I had not thought to check the fit of the rings from my old pistons until my new ones arrived. So, my pistons were ".020" over, from the service information and the measurements I took I saw the block was only bored .018. After micing the pistons I got a measurement that was .017 over thus only giving me .001 piston/wall clearance. Finally, the cause of the smoke...drumroll, .070in ring end gap with the gaps on the same side of the piston instead of 180* out. The oil control rings would not even stay in the bore, they just fell right through. These were not the results for just one bore, this was EVERY CYLINDER. The only explanation I can see is that they either lost or broke my rings and reused the stock rings.
