Its easy and quick to do.

Jack up car
remove wheel
turn steering to full opposit lock
use a flat blade screw driver to remove what is left of the old one
push on new one
straighten wheels
replace wheel
lower jack

Repeat on other side

but the parts that we need to replace are they only a dealer iteam or can we buy at the local parts store

Dealer only, I think I paid about £3 each so there not expensive. Its just a plastic mushroom that goes over the lock stop bolt.

one more quick question. does the grinding/snapping noise mean damage is being done to parts, or are two parts just squeaking against each other?

Its basically a bolt head rubbing against a dished metal plate thats about 1" square. Its not really doing damage so to say unless your bouncing off the lock stops hard all the time.

For those of you asking what parts are needed.... ugh.

Read page 2 of this thread and IJ will tell you EXACTLY what part you need from toyota. ;)

THANK YOU IAN!!! I had looked at that diagram for 5 mins easy and just thought that was a nut or something. ::dunce::

<<<Ordering that part later today. :)

It's usually the steering stop cover, but...

If the bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the spindle are too long they'll touch the rotor and make a nasty noise. If they're just the right length, you'll hear nothing except at large steering angles or going fast around a corner.

That one took me a while to find, right after I bought the car. Somebody used the wrong bolt, which was just a little too long. I ground off 1/4" and it's been fine ever since.

If the plastic covers have been worn through for awhile it's a good idea to replace B and C on each side as the bolt head will wear a little and the new cap will be unsupported.

Should only be a couple of bucks from the dealer being a wear item Toyota are usually pretty good on price.
