My guess was that the 20+ year old foam bushing OR part of the dash finally gave up, and the small bit of air that was circulating in the cabin gave it enough power to get puffed out into the cabin.

A thumps up to the older materials theory. Tho you may have also had a visitor known as field mice or chipmunks^^^

Long story short, the donor car I purchased for my 5 speed swap had been sitting for about a month. When I removed the (Heater, blower, cores) there was a nice bedding area for the rodents. Ya never know ^^

I don't expect rodents although you're right, never know.

No issues since yesterday morning though... well, except for my fuel tuning shifting a lot this morning, but I think it is most likely unrelated as it was fine all day yesterday, even when the smoke thing occurred.g
