Slow to crank and wont start

Well after some more diassembly of the engine it looks like whoever put the new distributor in a few years ago took off the valve cover and did not tighten it down and the oil went down the back of the motor and thats what burned it up. Too bad too it was all that high mileage.

I don't understand why they took off the VC to replace the distributor, but the VC gaskets leaking is a common problem with these motors. When they do load up with oil and water they usally will start having problems running due to the plug wires shorting out.

Burned it up???? Did it catch fire?

Well I dont think the previous owner was dealing with skilled mechanics. By burned up I mean it ran out of oil. Didnt mean to imply it caught fire. It got low on oil while the previous owner was driving it.

I was going to remove the valve covers and inspect the cams and the right cover was pretty much just resting on the head all the screws were loose.
