Slight play in wheel when I torque lug nuts

My passenger rear wheel has a slight play or shimmy when I go to torque the lug nuts all the way. Even with all the lug nuts tightened I can still move the wheel slightly. My friend suspected it may be wheel bearings? I'm not quite sure what could be causing it but I'm sure this problem has to do with the vibration I get when ever going over 70+ MPH. The vibration is not RPM related as I can be in neutral(idle) and going 70 and the vibration will still be there.

Anyone know?

Have you checked your tie rod's and ball joints? These will cause the wheel, and entire hub to have some play in it.

the best way to check is to get that wheel in the air, and try to wobble the wheel from side to side (with your palms on opposite sides of the tire), and up and down to feel for play in the suspension. If the wheel moves around when trying to wobble, get somebody to peek behind the tire when you do it to see what part has play in it.

If you can't get it to wobble, you can take the wheel off and check for play with a pry bar of sorts and sticking it between the hub and control arms, etc. to try to find movement. just be careful not to damage any boots and such.

I come from a land down under
There is a Spherical joint on the rear upright that's prone to drying out/failure that will give the symptoms you describe.

Also check the wheel bearings they're stout but do wear.

What you described is pretty much what I did. I had the right rear up on a jack stand and I would be able to move the wheel very slightly like toe in toe out. The play is about 1/4 of an inch at most.

ok then you need to get somebody to peek behind to see where the play is, and replace that part. or pull the wheel off yourself and use a pry bar.
