Hey guys and gals im a new member and i wanted to ask your opinion on something. What makes a good sleeper car? I have known people who tried to keep their car as stock looking as possible and others who have mismatched body work with 12k+ in engine mods (damn Mustang owners) so what do you guys consider a sleeper or what do you look for to help identify one?

I just bought a motor that will make my truck a nasty sleeper. It's a '94 Toyota 4x4 on 31x10.5" mud tires, with body rust all over. I'm putting a 9.1:1 compression ratio turbocharged 7MGE in it and plan to crank out 300-350rwhp. That's sleeper status to me, when something takes you 100% by surprise.

Picture a mk2 supra with stock rims and all original body work, some faded paint, and 1 or 2 rust spots here and there. You pull up to it at a red light hoping to leave it in your dust with a car like a 370z. In reality you get shit kicked yourself (the mk2 supra actually has a 2jz under the hood with a big single) .... that's a sleeper car.

Opposite of a ricer's car.

Edit: Making a sleeper is making a car go as fast as possible while making it look as slow as possible. Some might even do the same for the sound.

Here's an interesting one; 1980 Alfa Romeo 164 Sedan (http://jonsibal.com/blog/2008/03/ultimate-sleeper-car/):

You'll never spot a sleeper, thats the point. If you want to try and make guesses,I would start by listening to the noise a car or truck makes, see if it sounds like its got balls. And check out the tires. If they are slicks or something really sticky then something might be up.

My neighbors volvo 850 is pretty sleeper. Awd 4 door brick. Mbc and a full exhaust is getting him about 300+hp at 16psi.

Here is my lil sleeper...

Externally stock 77 Celica liftback, with primer haha.
From the outside you would never know anything was done to it, even still running 14x5.5" wheels and 195-70-14's

I have ruined a lot of ego's with this thing :)

Any car that is less than stock exterior wise, but above stock performance wise.

That's what he said, lol:
