Whenever people ask who my favorite drummers are, it's like duh of course neil peart is a given, dennis chambers, david garibaldi, carter beauford, and so on. The legends are always implied in my opinion.

Look around on youtube, there's a ton of nobody's who can groove their asses off and the asses of anyone in the room. Are they famous? No. Are they gonna get people going "WHOOOAA SICK FUCKIN DRUMMING MAN U R SO FAST"? No. But they play with more musicality than raw speed.

There's so very much more to drumming than how fast you can play. That mostly just entertains people who don't know any better. I mean sure it's technically challenging, but it's still not that interesting. Blast beats get you so far and then you're stuck.

I just get so tired of people thinking drummers are so great just because they can do double time at 280BPM or something equally pointlessly fast.

The drums are an instrument just like a guitar, bass, violin, trumpet, or whatever. They should be treated as such and their entire dynamic range should be excersized. It's not very interesting to listen to any of those other instruments if all they do is play all the notes they can as loud and fast as they can.

end rant.

Some other good stuff:
