Should I retrofit to r134a? or is r12 possible?

When the freon can is upside down, it will charge as a liquid. Bye-bye compressor, and the resulting debris will go thru the system.

What bluepearl said. Liquids are incompressible. It's the governing principle behind hydraulics. You can charge with liquid but the compressor must not be running and it should be done on the high side. That said some people do it on the low side without problems but either way the compressor must not be running. The advantage to charging with liquid is speed. I'll do it either way depending on how I feel. I have both a scale and a charging cylinder but since the scale doesn't require filling I tend to use it more.

tekdeus: It's legal in every state. Last I heard Wisconsin doesn't permit the sale of small cans though.
