I disagree Ric, while it can make it sometimes easier to miss shifts, I've never done it, in any of the dozen or so cars I've driven with short shifters. If you're being absent minded and not trackign what you're doing, then I guess you might throw it to the wrong fork. But in my experiences, everytime I'm driving HARD, the short shifter is less likely to go into the wrong gear- its a much more precise movement.
And actually all short shifters do is raise the fulcrum. Sometimes they'll have different stick designs to better place the knob, but mostly its just raising the fulcrum.
