Just wanted to get some tips for shifting a manual trans. car with out mashing the clutch.

I have to drive with a severely sprained left ankle and I want to use it as little as I can get away with.:icon_conf

Question: does it hurt the trans to pull the car out of gear (into neutral) with out mashing the clutch.

To get into gear, (1st gear) i have to use the clutch. going into all other gears I pulled the shifter out of gear and bumped at the next gear till it slid in smoothly.(it doesn't grind) will that hurt anything?

anyone have any tips? Please! lol

thanks guys

Yes and yes. Excessive wear/damage can and will occur. The R154 wasn't meant to have it's gears floated, but it can be done. Ask kwnate about his world famous 1/4 mile pass ;).

shifting w/out the proper engagement of the clutch is like driving your car with no oil in the engine... good luck with your ankle !:nono:

If you're a true dorifto, you can drive using only your right foot for clutch and gas. ULTRA-EXTREME-HEEL-TOE FTW!!!

hahaha!

sounds like a great way to mess up my good ankle. :p

I'll try no gas in 1st. (I am driving my Camaro today because it has less petal throw than in the supra) so i dono how its gonna respond having a "large" cam on take off with no throttle.

i drove my car a week without using the clutch, only because my clutch was roasted. i only used it in first. of course it was with the w58. now my tranny has 250,000 miles on it with no problems.

someone explain to me how it is harder on your transmission when shifting smoothly without using a clutch. If you avoid grinding and bucking the car when you pull in and out of gear, it is no different than driving using a clutch.

I did it all the time with the 85 Supra and so does the 89T. My left angle hurt too and I can't really use that often.
If your engine RPM match with the tranny input RPM you can shift it in and out without hurting a darn thing.

Ask those semi truck driver. How the hell do they shift thru all 13 years.

because when the clutch is released the parts inside the tranny (one side of the syncro) can move freely and speed up or slow down to match the speed of the other side that is going towards the drive shaft. when you dont release the clutch, one side is held at engine rpm and one side is held at drive shaft rpm, relying on perfect timing and rev matching. the engagement (while might not make audible noises) will be harsh compared to clutch-ed shifting. just because it goes in doesnt mean the syncros wont be damaged.

when the clutch is pressed the two sides of the syncros press together and the smooth surface of the cone speeds up or slows down the other side untill the speed is equal, then the teeth engage each other and link the engine to the output shaft. without the syncros matching speeds the teeth will bind together (grinding), sometimes more then others depending on the differential in speed. do you want the teeth to force a speed match? or the smooth surface of the cone (put there just for this reason) to match the speeds?

its your tranny though, i personally wouldnt do it.

Driving a semi without the clutch is actually easier than with it. Timing is everything but the 10 speed I drove if you used the clutch....damn....it sucked.

you only really need to the clutch for first, and long as your really good at rev matching, tranny shouldnt get too messed up.

I find it amazing, how people are now proving their ability to drive by not using parts that were designed for just that...
.
yea I am soo cool I don't need a clutch, I can match my RPMs to drive...

i did it once in my transmission just to see, and honestly it took me longer then just normal shifting...

drive the car how it was ment to be driven, don't risk blowing your transmission to show off...

Just use the damn clutch, ok. It's there for a reason. It sounds pretty pointless to argue about who can drive without using the clutch and who can't.

If you're having trouble with your ankle, maybe try talking to your car or health insurance. They might be able to set you up with some kind of rental car or something while you're healing. Or get a ride with a family member or friend when you need it. Or maybe borrow their car if absolutely necessary.

If my leg was injured an I couldn't drive my MT Supra, I would just garage it until I could drive again.
