syncros are going out. shift to reverse first and then to 1st. this happens from riding the clucth. instead of letting the clutch out evenly with the gas when starting out, your giving it more gas and slowly letting the clutch out hence the term riding the clutch. i know because ive done it to 3 cars myself.

each gear has it's own syncro. (I think) I could be wrong. If I am, sorry, it's late, and I just want to help.

Stop on a slight decline. Put the car into neutral. Try to shift into first. Is it tough?? Now, let off of the brake pedal and try to put the car into first while the car is rolling from a stop. If it goes in easily, it's gotta be your first gear "synchronizer ring". (thank you johnathan) Again, I could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

Don;t believe reverse has a syncronizer. But thats besides the point :p

Also, FYI, we don't have a 4th gear, we have a direct drive in that case

Yes, there is no synchro on reverse. Which is why it will grind unless you put the transmission into a forward gear 1st to stop it or just wait a few seconds while it stops on its own.

It's also a straight cut gear IIRC.
