yeah so in every gear and mostly in 3rd, the shifter does not seem to be notched in place like it should be. well it fits in there good but it'll just move slightly towards neutral when i take my hand off of it. With very little pressure toward neutral, you can feel a vibration in the shifter.
am i explaining this right? this a common problem?
couple things i thought about.
i put in a green truck bushing. was i supposed to leave the rubber ring that was in there before and seat the new bushing on top of it? because i left it out.
and also, i only have the most outer rubber boot on, without the other boot (flat with a hole in the middle and a thick lip around the hole) and that metal piece that sits around the outside. i forgot to put it on and decided i'd put it on when my leather boot comes in. could this affect it?

any ideas?

did you get the little cup for the end of the shifter? if it's worn you won't be all the way in gear...

I recommend marlin crawler's shifter seat and cup as well...

yes i did get a new cup thing, but the teflon cylinder that it rides in is not there because apparently noone knows it exists and toyota couldnt find it for me either.
how would low tranny fluid cause this? i just changed the fluid and put in the required amount so i should be good with that.

How long have you been having this problem? Your detents may be damaged or non-existant, and/or this could be caused by damaged synchros. To my knowledge, low fluid has nothing to do with it. Shifter bushings may, if it's not actually going in to gear.

it's going into gear fine, and doesn't pop out, but it just feels like it not notched into place as good as it should be. theres no grinding either. i guess i'll be able to describe it better once i drive it again this weekend. right now my good friend is driving it around in his town breaking the clutch in before i drive it back to my house, so im basically explaining it from what he's saying (trying to avoid another towtruck experience).

if you're at the right RPM it will easily pop out (this is determined by load)

under load it shouldn't pop out easily...

yeah so it's not as bad as i seem to have made it out to be. it really only happens in 3rd. when its in gear, it'll vibrate a little and if you move it up slightly, but not to much, it'll be fine. i haven't had any popping out of gear problems either.

did u ever figure out what the problem is? i'm having the same issue w/ mine...requires very little effort to take it out of third gear (only third gear, no grinds, etc).

As I posted over on "Data Base Error" ummmm Supra Forums ;) bent shift fork will do what you describe.

haha, that's why i'm here...thanks IJ. i posted a response in SF (i though the "shift fork" was the "clutch fork" but i am wrong). how hard is it to replace the shift fork? is this something i need to have a shop do or can i do this myself? thanks.

does it require removing the gears or just disassembling the housing and i can get to it? also, what could happen if i keep driving it like so? like i mentioned, it does not pop out of gear. sorry for all the questions but thanks for your quick answers.

If it bends any more it'll start popping out of gear under power.

If it's just a bent fork you don't need to remove the gears just the housings and the PITA rails and pins. (Take LOTS of pics as it comes apart it's a good idea to have a camera helper)

Time for me to bail and go to bed good luck!
