I replaced my busing twice now and it gets loosening up... Why? It seems that where it goes down into the tranny look kinda beat up... why?

thanks

What bushing did you get? I would suggest a Marlin Crawler shifter bushing and seat. I cleaned the hell out of the spot where the bushing goes and cleaned the shifter itself. Get any and all old slivers and chunks of plastic out of there before you get another bushing.

To your knowledge was the car ever run without a shifter bushing? The ball the bushing snaps onto might be worn down and it might account for the shift linkage being battered.

The replacement bushing Sl1deways suggests *may* last a good amount longer. However I would try to smooth out any sharp edges or burrs on the shifter linkage before installing the new bushing.

http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transmission/trans_parts.htm

I'll see if I still have the part numbers.

EDIT:
MC-10078, Shifter Socket
MC-10077, Heavy Duty Shifter Seat, All Other Toyota Applications

In order for me to get the seat installed I did have to sand around the outer circumference a little. Then it flipped right in as the installation instructions on their website shows.

The seat is what snaps over the little ball at the end of the shift lever. Like CRE said the Marlin bushing might last longer. If the area is rough it will still eat through a bushing given time. Any pics of said area?

See the last pic:

It's not the best picture of the damage, but it is visible. I suspect the stock shifter bushing disintegrated and the shifter beat the hell out of the inner sleeve for several thousand miles.

Awesome, THANKS! i hope it works.... my shifter seat is the green truck bushing or whatever... would getting the marlin bushing tighten up the shifter even more than the green truck shifter bushing?

From looking at my TSRM, you should be able to remove the shift lever housing without removing the extension housing. Have a look at the reassembly steps. ;)

Which bushing are you talking about?

If you're referring to the one inset into the shift linkage, I don't see any reason why the old rubber grommet and metal sleeve couldn't be cleared out and a metal insert pressed in.

If you're referring to the shifter bushing, I suppose it could be done, but it would have to be a two piece unit and it would wear down on both the ball at the end of the shifter and the shift linkage over time. There's a reason they used something soft in between the two metal parts. If you really feel like constantly pulling the shifter for regular cleaning and regreasing then go ahead. :p

It's only a common problem due to our cars age... regular wear and tear. I do recommend replacing the stock shifter bushing with the urethane bushing from Marlin Crawler when the time comes, the same for the seat.

Is it possible to make metal busings ? that last a little bit longer? seems to be a common problem

well the marlin crawler bushings are made of a much more Heavy duty material that doesn't degrade like the stock bushings. The problem with a metal bushing would be that there would be alot of noise coming from the shifter, it would have a super high pitched whine when driving, basically it would it sound like a Le Mans car transmission, They whine like no other!, Really. Here's a crazy ass insanely loud whining lotus esprit v8 race car, You won't believe it, lol.

...those are straight-cut gears, like reverse but in ALL OF THEM!

The marlin crawler seat and lower socket will SPANK the heck out of every other option. I have purchased three sets for three different cars and I will never use anything else. The problem with the sleve is that you have to spend ~$70 to replace it.

do you have to replace the whole sleve? where it connects to the extension housing? I don't think im gonna replace mine, i'm just gonna load the shifter, bushing and sleve with grease and it should work for a little while, then i'll buy the marlin crawler bushings, sounds like a good investment.

Chris 89: Are you trying to get the "shift lever housing" in this link off?
http://cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?Section=MT&Page=34

Look on the big end of the extension housing. There's some tabs around the outside edge. You need to gently tap these tabs toward the back of the trans to get the extension housing off the pins. Once you get it back far enough, the shift lever housing will slide off the shift lever, and you can pull it off. Yes, its a pain in the ass. I would pull the trans. and stand it on the bell housing to do this.

Edit: Thanks for the link, CRE
