i am removing my engine for a rebuild. i got every thing taken off i tried removing the engine and i cant seem to get the engine separated from the tranny. right now there is about an inch in between the block and the bell housing and the engine moves side to side but not out. it is a five speed. any one know if i am forgetting to remove something? i have taken engines out of old ass beetles and they just slide right out it seems like something is holding this one in by the tranny.

thanks for the help if this was answered befor i cant find it.

look in the inspection plate on the driver side of the tranny, where the slave cylinder for the clutch goes. you'll see the clutch fork. grab that with a par of vice grips, and wiggle it out yes it does come out, its not bolted on.

Got to remove the c-clip and take out the pin first, find someone with small hands to do this.

Did you disconnect the pressure plate from the flywheel?

$20 says you didn't.....:)
Easiest, there are six bolts holding it on there, will need someone to turn the crank over to get all of them out.

Easy to take out the trans with the engine if you have a leveler.
