Hey guys I'm an Aeronautical Engineering student at Embry Riddle and I thought I would share the aircraft that my team and I (7 people) did for our capstone project. We are in the first semester of the preliminary design of the aircraft and next semester will be the detailed design of the aircraft (structural design). My position on the team is the actual CAD engineering so the plane that I'm posting up consists of 90 hrs of work and is pretty close to what we want the aircraft to look like. The request for proposal that was given to us is listed below.
Anyways thought I would share this as this is what has been keeping me away from my supra for so long. My plans are to land an intership this summer before I graduate in December to hopefully get my foot in the door with industry.
1.0 Statement of Need (SON)
The Department of Defense (DOD) including the U. S. Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines have determined a need for a survivable, fixed-wing, close air support (CAS) aircraft for the defense of land and sea resources. This manned aircraft will be deployed from land or ship and be capable of effectively destroying hostile targets in a high-threat environment in close proximity to friendly forces. The aircraft must be capable of striking targets with all existing, air-to-surface munitions at low or high altitudes or airspeeds as dictated by the threat. This aircraft will be versatile enough to replace all other aircraft designated to perform the CAS mission including the A-10. The aircraft will be extremely maneuverable at all altitudes and airspeeds for offensive and counter-offensive operations. The fully loaded, combat radius of this aircraft will be 200 NM with a 10 minute target engagement at high Gs .
2.0 Request for Proposal (RFP)
This Request for Proposal addresses the development of a manned, close air support fighter capable of defending ground or sea-based resources within 200 NM of the aircraft base.
3.0 Vehicle Design Specifications/Requirements
- Launched from land or carrier.
- Maximum take-off and landing distance for land operations of 8,000 ft.
- Sustained maneuver capability of: 5 Gs at sea level and 220 KTAS, 4 Gs at 10,000 ft and 220 KTAS, and 3 Gs at 30,000 ft and 270 KTAS.
- Combat radius of 200 NM with 10 minute engagement at high G (above).
- Carry a leathal load of existing air-to-surface munitions and a 20mm cannon.
- Capable of engaging targets at altitudes from ground level to 30,000 ft.
- Cockpit designed for high maneuvering at maximum pilot efficiency.
General Dimensions of the aircraft are 57.5 ft long and 64 ft wing span. The wing area is 1027 ft^2 and the aircraft is designed to have 35,000 lbs of thrust to meet the maneuverability requirements.
