Yeah but this either the mk3 or mk4 will be my daily driver. I'm guessing that a mk3 w/2jz engine plus a fat ass turbo isnt gunna get very good mileage. Will be fun but gas is killer these days. I dunno, I've become very fond of my mk3 over the couple of years that I've had it. I think I'll go with what the most of you guys suggest (on this mk3-biased forum ;)) and stick with my '88 and finally put some money into it. So, 2jz engine, some suspension, definitely new rotors to replace the squeaky stock pieces of shit, paint job...What do you think all of that stuff will cost all said and done? I'm not a very mechanical guy so I'll probably have pay to have it installed. Anyone know how much the average mechanic will charge to do an engine swap (7mge->1/2jz)

If your really looking for a 2jz I know someone who has a built crate motor he needs to get out of his shop. He has a converter of some kind to make the wiring easy as well.

My opinion....... Now is the wrong time to buy an mk4.... the new supra may very well be out in the next 2 yrs.... after that, your mk4 will probably depreciate another 30-40%.

I'd like to own a new supra myself (the mk5 or maybe the new nsx when it comes out).... I wouldn't waste my money on the mk4, just my 2c.

think about what car you guys are talking about here, its a supra. I dont have the money for a MKIV but its certainly not a waste of money.

I don't think they will depreciate very much. The new Supra is designed to be the new Japanese super car, and priced accordingly (ie: WAY out of most people's budget) so everyone will not be selling their mk4s to buy a $100,000+ new one. This is my prediction at least.

the new supra will not be $100k

it will start at around 35k and probably max out at around 60k.... they want to compete with the 350Z

Compete with the 350z? A 4 yr old with a tricylcle could beat a 350z.

IMO, the mk4 is a nicer car than the mk3. Hate it or love it, it is, and the majority likes the mk4 better. It all depends on a lot of things, why you bought your car, what your intentions were, and how much you like your car. I was debating buying an mk4 also and getting rid of my mk3, and then I remembered those things, and haven't even thought about getting an mk4 since. If I'm rich or something I might take one or get one, but prefer it? No.

I have to agree with mkIIIman089

When the MKIV was first released it was 60K Back in 93 now in 2006 that 60K would easily be 100K +

If Toyota still wants to Produce the Super car that it used. Then you need to compare it the the Vette Z06. Thats what it used to compete with (market wise) back in the day. I have heard of it refured to as the Japanese Corvette of its day. Think Viper, Vette.

not 350Z, RX-8, Mustang the Supra is a whole diferent class of car.

I think that toyota would loose a huge Fan base if they turned there super car into a Yuppie mobile. Even Mazda is rumored that they will be introducing a new RX-7 around the Same time Toyota will be coming out with the MKV

Not to high jack the thread or anything.

In my opinion an MKIV is great but not a 94 i would try for 96 or Newer if you really want to go down that road.

I think myself if i had a MKIII with a great frame and no issues then ya 2JZ, Susspension, brakes but i think for all that and putting it all together you will probably spend more then 10K

Keep in mind any project that you work on even if you figure out all the costs. There are always things that you will not see coming where you need to dump more $$$$ in. If it the MKIV or converting your 88 MKIII

i have heard it a few places, and i really believe that too.

If you look at out Supras and the corvette for the years even there improvment have been simular including horse power numbers (Keeping in mind the 1JZ 280 HP in 1989)

Is the MkIV nicer than the MkIII? This is such a subjective question.

The MkIV is NEWER! It has newer technologies. Is it nicer?

The MkIII is more comfortable on long road trips than the MkIV.

My favorite argument: The MkIV is lighter. True... but only a couple hundred pounds.

It is a fact that the majority of the "enthusiasts" flock to the MkIV. I'd be willing to bet that if the MkIV came out looking like a minivan that could run 11s out of the box (and could be upgraded to hit 7s) they would be flocking to this mythical MkIV too.

At the end of the day this is all about your own personal preference.

Can the MkIII be in the same class as the top MkIVs? You bet your @$$!
Can the MkIII be built to beat 98% of the MkIVs out there? Again with a Yes.
Can a MkIII turn heads like the MkIVs? Rolling down the highway with the roof off and a fresh wax job I get people asking if I'd sell - I guess that means Yes there too.
Can the MkIV be ragged out and look like a rolling POS? YEPPERS! We're starting to see more and more of them like this.

Back to the original question: Is the MkIV nicer than the MkIII? This question can only be answered on a case by case basis. I'd take Ron's 92 over many MkIVs I've seen. But then Ken Henderson's 94 is the ultimate hottness! (for me anyway)

Choose your destiny - but choose carefully - you may find the MkIV you think is so great winds up being more of a money pit than your MkIII.

Like hell I'm gona read 4 pages saying what I already know they're telling you. Here's my input. If you like the mk4, and want the car buy it. I would. I love the mk3, I even have a $4k+ engine sitting in my garage, but I'd sell it in a second if I were getting an mk4. You can always buy a cheap mk3, but have fun with the mk4 for awhile. It'll satisfy you.

i'll bet anyone right now that the mk5 supra will start under $40k, who wants to take the bet? :) just a small wager between friends... say like $20 ;)

i've been to almost every major car show, and i've bugged the reps over there with a million questions, all they tell me is basically that the new supra will be out within a yr or so, that it will be a V6 no turbo, and it is meant to compete with the 350Z. My girlfriend is a manager of a drycleaners on ventura blvd and sees a lot of high class folk including this guy (who owns a car magazine and test drives all the new cars and is uber wealthy).... anyhow she always tries to get the inside scoop on the new supra for me so this is first hand info ;) From everything I've heard about the new supra I think I'll pass on it to be honest. If I want a NA japanese sports call I'll wait for the new nsx or rx-7 or something that looks nicer then the pics I've seen of the mk5 which look to be another jellybean.

just my 2c
