it is another name for Form-In-Place Gasket.

Toyota OEM FIPG (aka seal packing)

here it is for sale at driftmotion: http://store.driftmotion.com/static/i-fipgblack.php

i think a tube like that is $20 from the dealer.

you can also try your luck with a substitute RTV substance (like Permatex's The Right Stuff, or Ultra Black, or Ultra Grey), just make sure it is impervious to oil, gasoline, coolant, etc, as necessitated by the application location.

In a post a few back, it sounded like you might not take the head to a machine shop. The head needs a quick milling before being reinstalled for the best chance of success. I would STRONGLY advise against simply cleaning it at home and slapping it back on. A shop should charge under $150 for a simple cleaning and mill.

If it is $20 at the dealer then I might as well get it there since at driftmotion with shipping it's like 35 cents less than the dealer. My question is where do you apply it? It is very difficult to tell exactly where those positions are from that picture in the TSRM lol.

I am going to take the head to my guy who will check it out for me.

actually it is probably almost $30 at the dealer. i think it lists at $28 + tax. not really 100% sure though, i havent bought any in a while. I just remember back when i checked, it was cheaper to get it from driftmotion than from the dealer. so yea, definitely check with your local dealer and see if it is better to buy from them than online.

heh those pictures are one of the clearest parts of the rebuild. hope your friend knows what he is doing, cuz you are gonna need help. ;)

well place #1 is on the block. you put a bead down right where the rear timing cover touches the block. it is pretty straight forward. there are only 2 places where the timing cover meets the block. put a bead along those two joinings. you dont need a ton of the stuff, just enough to make a nice seal when you put the head gasket and then the head on. refer to EM-55 in the TSRM

place #2 is on the cylinder head under the #1 cam bearing cap. you put a bead down on the head on either side of the camshaft journal cap mounting bolt holes. just put a thin bead from where the metal starts at the back rim straight up to the front of the head where the metal again stops. have the bead be a straight line, and have it be touching or very very close to touching the start of the bolt holes (try not to get any INSIDE the actual bolt hole though). refer to EM-52 in the TSRM

place #3 is right next to where you loaded up place #2. it just helps seal the cam covers. refer to EM-56 in the TSRM

the book really shows you exactly where to put it how much to use. pretty dummy proof, just follow the directions and use the pictures for reference.

I figured once I was in there that picture would make more sense lol. Also bare with me because when I am doing stuff like this I tend to either ask simple questions or questions that I know the answer to but want reassurance, like I would even ask you guys how to breathe lol but I do it so I am 100% sure on what is going on.

it's cool, i do the same thing. :p ask away!

dont hesitate to search though. one of the absolute best informational tools i've found for working on the supra is:

use google and search "site:Supramania.com your question here"

so for your example "site:Supramania.com seal packing"

cant stress enough how wonderful that little search string is.

good luck man.

From my experience with searches I never get the exact answer I need or it finds threads with a similar issue but not the one I have

Now I am getting to the part where I start ordering the parts and tearing down the motor and I would like to run by some parts to make sure they are the right ones. I am going to replace the timing belt and tensioner I see one on Rockauto.com a good year kit that says for interference engine applications, would that work for my 7mgte?

well 7m engines are non-interference, so... yea. just make sure you are searching by vehicle application. it shows me that the goodyear timing belt kits are part #s GTK0126 and GTK0237

personally, i'd go with this: GATES Part # TCK237 PowerGrip Premium OE Timing Belt Component Kit; 2 Components (1 Belt, 1 Tensioner, 0 Idlers) $43.99

Yea I thought I remember reading that 7Ms are non interference motors. Thanks for the recommendation I'll go for the Gates kit.

My shifter wobbles and shakes, to fix that I need to replace the shifter bushing right? I think it's part number 90387-08134, seems to be cheaper at the dealership than on driftmotion.com

Well, even if the 7M is non-interference, it doesn't take much of a build-up on things to make for a problem, and a busted timing belt means a zero WHP motor. As such, the timing belt is something that is so worth a bit of extra attention.

Yea that is the only thing I am really more afraid of is the timing belt because if I accidentally throw something off or do something wrong I don't want pistons smashing into valves lol but 7Ms aren't interference so I don't have to worry about that.

I ordered ARP head studs, shifter bushing and lever socket from Marlincrawler (I found a thread about those on here through searching and come highly recommended over OEM), and the GATES timing belt kit. My cousin may be able to get me a deal on an OEM head gasket kit so I will see what happens with that tomorrow.
