It will cause the ECU to enter fail-safe function. I look at the back-up function of the ECU as "limp mode"...only the basic functions of the ECU operate to allow the engine to run.

In any case, code 52 is due to failure of the knock sensor(s) or the circuit. Any detonation detected by the KS will not illuminate the CEL. This code will cause corrective timing retard to be set at it's max value. Basically your car will run like crap due to the retarded timing.

??? The check engine light turned off after i let it sit. Now when I drive it it does not come back on. The car ran fine and runs fine now....Anything you guys would advise to check? Other than the KS?

I should have been more clear, a code 52 will not illuminate the CEL...among others.
You should pull the diagnostic codes again to see if any codes are stored. After noting the codes, pull the EFI fuse for a minute or so to reset. Drive it for a day and check your codes again for any reoccurring problem.

If you have a code 52 popping up, the car will run like crap for the reasons stated earlier. In most cases, it's the wiring to the ECU that's at fault.

i know this is and old thread but i have the same code 52 poppin up after i hit second gear at cold start up. the rear ks connection was messed up and required a splice and reconnect. problem is it is still coming up with a code but now after it warms up to operating temp if i shut the car off it will not start until i reset the ecu via fuse removal....... could it be failsafe keeping the car from starting?

The ECU fail-safe mode will not cause the car not to start...it's whole purpose is to allow the car to run so it can get to a place to be fixed. Your no start problem lies elsewhere...I would check the CPS wiring and it's connector.

In any case, the code 52 needs to be fixed. Shaeff makes a re-wire harness...shoot him a PM.

ok cool im gonna check the cps wiring. and i painted the block before i dropped it in the car and i painted over the screwholes where the knock sensors go.... could that cause the 52 code to come up because its not grounded or does it not use the ks sensor as a ground

I would start by removing the paint from the KS mounting point.

After that I would do a rewire (either order 2 plugs from Toyota and get some shielded wire or order from Shaef).

If it still throws a code it could be a bad KS. This ended up being my problem (finally fixed it last night with a 2nd rewire and KS replacement and no light/codes on a midnight test drive or on the way to work :) ).
