If the knock sensors start reading knock will it show a CEL usually?

After my cams install I went out to get a AFR reading on my laptop and went lean from about 6200-7300. Scary when I got home and checked the data and saw it peaked at 13.0:1. I never threw a CEL and have never gotten one since I did my swap, but it does blink with the correct pins jumpered. I'm curious if it even works right.

no it wont set a code for knock. all it will do is start to pull timing once knock is detected. the only reason the CEL will come on is if there is a problem w/ the circuit itself (bad knock sensor, wiring, ecu).

to see if it is working properly, have someone hold a timing light on the crank pulley and then tap the intake mani w/ a hammer. if it is working correctly, you will see it pull timing. dont get carried away w/ the hammer since the intake is aluminum :icon_razz

So I went tunning tonight at 10 psi. and ended up at 12.8 and WOW that top end got strong. But after pulling %50 of the fuel I got BHG. :( The upside is I got my Cometic and ARP studs sitting right next to me.;) My Maft is going to help a great deal with tunning since it can pull fuel over all rpm ranges!!! That along w/ the safc is going to be awsome......this would be a good time to replace my FP w/ the walboro too....

You are going to kill your motor. Re-read the posts in this thread about AFR... :3d_frown:

Great posts -Rich87Tx2 and dbsupra90! :bigthumb:

It's interesting to see the different "philosophies" in SAFC tuning between DSMs and Supras. Main difference is that DSMers welcome the extra timing advance rather than try to prevent it. Of course DSMs have the distinct advantage of being able to monitor timing advance and knock counts, with the right software.

This would make a good thread for the archives, once the other posts were removed.

Sounds like you were trying to blow it ;)

At least now you've got a reason to rebuild the top end...

Well... I have another head sitting right here so it really doesn't matter since my HG is blown. Always gotta have a plan B.

Cant belive I missed this, what is this supposed to mean....

He means we've given you solid advice, yet you're still just commited to leaning your motor to death. :icon_bigg

13.1 or higher is probably buying a new motor.
13:1 is very bad. < - YOU
12.8 is bad. < - YOU

12.1 is getting risky.
11.7 is OK.
11.5 is safe.

This is interesting. It's the first time I've seen that.

That was something I picked up years ago, I thought from Reg Reimer back in the day. I can't find the source so maybe I should check out my MAFT PRO logs and make sure that holds true. <shrug>

I did locate this, which is very interesting reading for anyone interested in the 7MGTE ECU: http://suprasonic.org/pub/SONIC/MA70/TNSTCCS2.txt

Most of my comments were made to bring out more solid info since ALOT of this info hasn't been posted in this site before. As a matter of fact, this has been the most info that ive gotten from any other sites ive visited combined....

Yep, that's pretty much it. My main reason for posting that statement was the "I thought 13 was rich?" post. If you don't know the basics, you shouldn't be messing with the settings. Read first, then act; not the other way around.

But I agree that it spurred on some really good information. That's the reason I said that this should eventually be archived, with the other posts removed for easier reading. :)

Another question ive had throughout this hole thread (and the basis for my insanity) is that the supra is supposed to rich at top end, but my WB keep reading 14.8 without tunning.

that is normal under closed loop operation (<75% throttle).
under open loop/wot it runs in the 10:1 range. if you are running 14.8 under wot you have a serious problem.

JAV- i dont mind but at this point it seems kinda moot.

97tsi- thanks for the kind words :)

rich- i dont think it is worthless to tune past that point. it is usually off the chart rich and tuning can help bring that in. whether or not the timing is pulled past that point, a lot of the big turbos are still pulling hard in that range. while it might not be as effective if it is true about the timing, i believe it is still worthwhile as ive seen some power gains pulling some fuel from there. score one for the mpro- you can add some timing back in!

Oh good lord. Cya, I'm located in Pittsboro, NC, and I'm having a Supra meet
on the 21st of October (3 week-ish from now). Bring your car here with your
wideband and SAFC and I'll show you how to tune it. And we can do a check
of compression on your motor to make sure you didn't already kill it.
