There are flush kits designed specifically for this kind of thing once its in and running.

Personally, I think you're screwed now, and will be very lucky to ever get it all out, if you don't get the block cleaned again. (remember, that clean radiator/turbo/etc will now be filled with it too)

A previous owner didn't put one of those radiator stop-leak things in did they? Those make a huge mess and DO NOT work haha, I found that out when I drained the radiator on my car after towing it home when I bought it.

i have no idea. i think there was a bunch of water in it instead of antifreeze. then it sat up for awhile. it wouldnt suprise me if he did tho. but would that stop leak stuff cause it to rust?

No but dirty coolant and that crap after it's been sitting turns into sludge and places where it's dry it is like a powder. Running just water will cause it to rust. Water + metal + sitting for long periods of time = rust.

So, are you going to tear down the engine, or are you getting ready to slap it in as it sits? You can clean a lot of it up if you're tearing it down for a refresh.

its almost tore down. its a short block on a stand right now. i got all the other parts cleaned up. i thought about using a gun cleaning kit. the round wire brushes to get down in there. then blow it out with some air. it was really nasty around the water pump. i wish i had my cam to get some pics. what do you guys think about running it as a n/a then flush it idea? i got the n/a exust mani. and mdc proved you can use the gte eletroics. that way the crap wouldnt get in the turbo.

When you clean it, just make sure you don't scratch or score the mating surface of the block and head that way you don't run the risk of ruining a good seal for the head gasket. Running the car as an NA is going to make that think a pig to drive. Try cleaning out the water jackets and flushing them out with a cleaning agent (carb cleaner maybe, wait for someone to chime in who has done something like this though) and then rinse each passage really well with water to get all of the chemical out.

Assuming we're talking about real rust here and not some other form of deposit buy some two part Prestone heavy duty cleaner. The powdered stuff. Or buy some oxalic acid from your local chem supply store or Ebay. It's the same chemical that's in the Prestone cleaner. Put three tablespoons in a water filled coolant system and run it for an hour or two. Follow with the neutralizer and flush with water until it runs clear. This will completely clean the cooling system of rust without doing any damage.
