To properly break rings in you first need to make sure your afrs are good. Then go drive up and down a few hills. You deffinately need a load to seat the rings. You'll also want to do some engine breaking as well. So..go find a hill, accelerate up it(not full throttle) then engine break down. Then do it again but accelerate a little harder. Usually you dont want to let the engine idle for a long time or stay at a steady rmp for very long. Your rings will do most of their seating in the first 50 miles or so.Worked for me at least.
Edit- Check out this link http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm its for motorcycles but its the same principle.

You have to have load on the engine,on stands wont do much other than improper break in on your rings I do all mine in third or forth gear 1000rpm-4000rpm pulls plenty of load on the rings

Yep engine load as well as engine breaking are important, so on the street is necessary. Also you have to decide which school of thought you buy in to. An aggressive break in or an easy break in cycle. I believe in the aggressive style my self.

I'm the easy break in, always had awesome compression with that style

As with many things in life it is always what works best for you. ;)

None the less it sounds like you have a solid plan now.
