congrats on the job. Sitting at home for sixteen weeks.....

I was unemployed about 2 years ago.. I tolerated all of 3 days at home and quickly looked for a job. I am one of those few folks that can not do "nothing". It makes me restless and anxious......

So I looked for a job and 1 week later got one! :D

2 years ago is one thing, TODAY is a completely different story. In my town, hundreds of people are applying for the same positions EVERYWHERE. There was a bartender job that opened up at one classy restraunt here, 300+ people applied for it. We had a job fair here yesterday for the local casino, 1100 people came out and there were 500 jobs available. Doing local job searches online, I cannot find SHIT, and the jobs I HAVE applied for always give me an ecuse not to hire me, Oh my manager isn't in, oh we havent gone through your app yet, oh we're hired already, etc etc. I've been on this shit train for months.

What skills do you have that someone else does not?
What sets you apart from other candidates?

You need to ask yourself these questions, and figure out what the answers are. If your answer to both is "nothing" - you need to work on that.

In a competitive market, you're competing with all those other people for jobs. You've got to have something that grabs the hiring manager's attention.

not for anything but I landed this current gig in the middle of this ruckus. Specifically back in August :)

Now with that said. I am not going to say it was easy as I was handing out 20+ resumes DAILY. and did some other things to set my resume apart from everyone else. No not the color thing as that is done by everyone now a day :)

Look into WorkForce Investment Act (WIA). It's a program that I went through to get my training in automotives at a local community college. It will pay for your tuition, books, and supplies. Basically the government will pay so you can learn a trade. After I completed the Automotive course they also paid 1500 for my tools.

I know. I'm really pissy right now due to the fact my only income, my cafepress check is probably going to get lost in the mail and that screws me out of getting xmas presents for my kids. We moved a few weeks back, and did the whole forward mail thing, but we havent received any mail yet that would have went to that old address, and my check should be there tomorrow....

not having a jhob is the pinacle of my stress, of course. beingrejected for nearly a year straight by everyone is getting pretty friggin old.

yep, good times for all :(

Now that is laying a foundation! Nice work! GREAT ADVICE!

Now here is my opinion, and this is not directed at ANYONE on this forum.... But at the Honda Civic guys...lol

There are reasons why employers get more selective in tuff times.... Because they can.
1. Appearance - If you are riddled with tats and piercings.... like it or not, chances are good you will be put last on the list... Cover them up and remove the piercings. Uness you are applying at a tat shop.... Self expression is over rated. Your are the window into THEIR business... Not the otherway around...

2. Driving record, criminal record, can you pass a drug test? Sounds simple to me.... but I am told that these three things get more people disqualified. If you have made the decision that you HAVE to smoke weed, then you will never get a job that drug tests.... So you have eleminated yourself from great employment opportunities.

3. Attitude - Do you want a job or do you want to work? Everybody wants a job, not everybody wants to work. What are you willing to do?

4. Educaton - must have high school deploma. I've found that many people who actually own businesses are not college grads themselves, or even if they are, they will give a pass if they see potential.... refer to #3. Exception to this is in the professional workplace. Accountants, engineers, etc.

5. Are you willing to move? If there are no jobs, then maybe it is time to go elsewhere.

6. As the old saying goes, good help is hard to find.....

7. Go to bed early and wake up early. Make all of your contacts as early as possible. Calling a potential employer in the afternoon is suicide.

Today, someone somewhere is being hired....

Very good advice here. Couldn't have said it better myself. There is one thing though, so many people think they can't get a job because it requires college, well these days an employer would rather teach someone who has been working than to have a college grad that thinks the employer owes them something. I see so many people getting out of college thinking the jobs will find them.

I don't get it...........

I've been having a tough time finding a job. Im a full-time student and part time jobs that will work around your school schedule are hard to find.

Now for next semester, I've already registered for all night classes so hopefully that will help me a little...

Keep up the hard work.... My son is a full time student and he works at Discount Tire... It's hard work, but really likes it compared to resturant work. They close at 7:00pm so he gets home early in the evening. and off on Sundays.... They seem to be pretty flexible with his hours... Pay is better that average.... They too have a hard time finding drug free, criminal free workers....

I see on their website that Discount is going to open a store in Macon, GA.... You might give that a try. FInd a store as close to you as possible and see if yuo can get hired there in the mean time. BTW they drug test....

Keep your head up! The decicion you make today is the life you live tomorrow.

Try being a construction worker around here and try finding drug free people that can read a tape, use a nail gun without killing themself, climb a ladder without falling off, or making me fall. Most of these people don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, but they find money for them pills...........

I worked construction for many years. Even after falling off a three story building, multiple shoulder dislocations, and general work injuries. But I never liked the job and over times it just wears on you physically and mentally. I've done temp work in factories, food service work, computer repairs, and various other jobs. I just got fed up with being sick and tired of my job. I finally decided to change my career choice and went back to school for training and got the government to pay for it.

I sat down and thought about what I like to do. I love working on cars, cussing, throwing things, smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. Then I thought about which careers could I do what I love to do and get paid for it. So I became a auto mechanic. At my last job it was not uncommon to see me with a cup of coffee in one hand a ratchet in the other, cigarette hanging from my lips, and cussing out the car that I was working on.

I don't fall of stuff since I am a Suprahero. I generally will just hover back down to the ground.

You forgot one very important point.

When you are looking for a job. Looking for a job IS your job.

I kid you not. 8am sharp and would stop at 4pm as most places, management starts to wrap up thier "mind" at that time. By that I mean that most the companies managers would start thinking more of, got to get this errand done, pick up kids, go to this, that.. thier mind was definetly not at work. So much so, that I almost lost THIS job I am in due to a 4:30pm meeting, they said no, but I persisted in getting just one more shot, this time around, at 9am sharp. Everyone was well rested and not tired (I could tell by the eyes and fidgetyness of the interviewers at the 4:30pm meeting that they were just not there or intrested in being there, yes I read people exceptionally well ;) ) and this time around, everyone to include me was content with how it went and I was hired.

In a time of joblessness such as this, how many here have actually begun to look at alternative (legal) ways to generate income? There are many ways to make money outside the traditional "employee"-type job which only require time and desire, but I don't beleive the majority of the population either knows about them, or is willing to learn about them.
