I am relieved to know that it wasn't detonation.
I've got a lot to do this weekend and hopefully I will get my problem fixed:

symptoms:
on acceleration, wot - running very rich and blowing smoke (haven't been able to confirm yet black or blue).
loosing oil - about a quart to quart and half a week (one silver dollar size spot on the ground in the morning).
tail pipe - coated black.

Best way to check decel smoke is to just accelerate to about 60 in 3rd, then let off the gas with the car still in gear. Let the engine slow the car down until you're at about 10mph. Basically you're just trying to pull as much vacuum as you can through the intake manifold. At that point it should be pretty obvious whether the turbo is blown or not.
I did this test and it produced a lot of, blue or gray, smoke as I started to pull off from the stop.
What does this test tell me?

after hunting around all the hoses for a leak, i finally just took it into a local Goodyear shop that had a smoke machine. they found the hole in the intake manifold gasket.
