I have an 87 non turbo auto. Just dropped a new motor and tranny. The torque converter was just recently replaced. On the freeway it revs to about 3500 goin 80.. Does that sound right? Feels like when I press on the gas it does not want to downshift to accel.. it just gradually gets there... Please help.. I have a funny feeling that the catalytic converter is clogged to shit and that would be the problem..... and that maybe the reason why the 1st motor was blown the first time.. any input would be great!

Not a flame, but if you can afford to get an engine/tranny dropped in and put in a torque converter, you should go ahead and put on a high-flow cat ne was if your's is lookin rough. Just curious as to whether you put in a high stall converter?

And about the downshifting, that's why you get stick :naughty: ...:icon_razz

That is the thing I have never thought about it until now. Cali emmissions are a bitch here so a high flow cat would be a problem. About the downshifting thing ... my sisters focus downshifts better... sigh

If your in california you'll know that that there are places you can take the car and it will pass. Some of those garages keep a test auto right there on the spot.

Also if your'e really that worried about the smog check..., you may want to concider a different auto.

It sounds like a transmission problem to me. That's what you get when you replace automatic with another $hitty automatic. Atleast if you would have converted to stick you would actually get to drive the auto instead of pointing it and pushing the pedal.

My buddy's MKII was a beast and it was an auto! The shifting was smooth and downshift was instant! I do not believe that Toyota's make shitty tranny's esp when the tranny has only about 40k!

lol....ummm what was I gonna say? oh yea about the auto's. I wouldn't knock em either, some auto tranny are very well engineered and a lot of racers use em on the strip, there is less of a powerloss from manual shifting and they just get a good quality high-stall converter.

Funny specs I read in the ma70 spec sheet... I see all the folks dynos and none I have seen break the 180 mark without engine mods. Figure you lose 20+ hp to the wheels... Did toyota spec the car to JDM specs?

That's 200HP at the crank... Most of the 7M-GE results I've seen are under 180HP at the wheel.

I have the same problem too, just occured last night when i was going home from work. the car never goes past 3k RPM. it was fine before i started work. the only way i can get it to go past 3k is if i put it in L then to 2 and then to D. Can i have some pointers here, im thinking about going stick, but if its fixable then ill just stay with the auto.

How is the TV cable looking on your car? (kickdown cable to transmission)

If it has a decent amount of slack, adjust it so there is only the slightest amount. Not to far now.

My car is fine with downshifts... I just tightened the kickdown cable as much as I could. That, and if I want to shift from 4th to 3rd I just turn off Overdrive.
