does anyone know what the cams are positioned at when they are at 0? Im retiming the engine and i got the head resurfaced and the ppl that resurfaced it took the cams out and forgot to put them back the same way. Now i know that there are notches on the cam gear and on top of the black plate.

Yeah, you just bring the crank to TDC and then line up those notches on the cams and back plate. You'll probably be needing to realign the CPS as well. Just follow the TSRM directions for timing belt install linked above and as long as everything lines up, it should be good.

CPS install: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?S=IG&P=24

Follow the instructions given and the TSRM links....they'll tell you exactly how to set it back up. If you want to verify the cam gears are bolted on correctly, look at Step 9 in the timing belt link, the pictures and notes tell you exactly where everything is supposed to be.

Is it any clearer?

The cam gears should have the pins in the center holes and lined up with marks.
#1 piston at TDC, check with a pencil or something.
Rotor pointing at #1 plug wire.
Crank pointing at "0".
Rotate the motor a couple revs and check all your marks again.

After it starts then check timing with a timing light. It will start if nothing else is wrong.

The engine is non interference. Put the head on the block, get it bolted down, and set things up as per the TSRM. There's no secret step we aren't telling you.

Even with your cams lined up with the notches you will have some valves open. There isn't any given time where all of the valve are closed at once. You have looked at the TSRM link that's been given right? Is so, there shouldn't be any question as to how to set your timing. Can you take pics and post each step of what you are doing? That would help us help you.

BTW, as mentioned before we have a non-interference engine. Meaning, you can turn the crank while the head is bolted down and none of your pistons will touch the valves. Even when the valves are fully open. You will not bend a valve turning the crank to get the timing marks lined up correctly. It seems as though you are afraid to bend a valve doing so. No worries with our engines.

ok i got the head resurfaced and the ppl that resurfaced it took the cams out and they didnt put them back the way i brought it to them. i just put the head on yesterday and put the cam gears to zero. intake 3 and exhaust 2 are open. now what should the crank be at. 0,5,10,15? in order to have the timing right

Because all that matters is that you have the pins through the middle holes of the cam gears. The marks of the cam gears lined up with the marks on the rear timing cover. The crank set at top dead center 0*. As long as your running 7mgte camshafts the valves will be open/closed exactly when they should be. If you've done everything as mentioned then you're good. Release the timing tensioner, and torque it down to 36lb/ft. Manually turn the crank 2 complete revolutions forward. Some people run one revolution backwards after doing the 2 forward ones. Check to see if your cam gear marks are still lined up correctly, and your crank pulley is set at 0*. You're done.

It tells you crank is supposed to be at 0 and cams are supposed to be at the matchmarks with the pin in the center hole on the gear. Why would it need to tell you what valves are open? Unless of course you've somehow managed to screw up how the cam is put in to the head or your cam developped extra lobes...
