I have a highly modded and tuned supercharged 255hp 2005 MINI Cooper S and my recent acquisition, a mint 1988 MK1 AW11 (MR2).
The product being discussed here is called "Black Wow" because it imparts a very durable and long lasting protection on exterior plastics that makes most people say "Wow". It wasn't intended for rubber, just plastics. It also wasn't originally intended for interior use because I felt that the solution to be solved was designing a product for exterior use that could be measured in months, not days, regardless of rain, car washes, etc. It had to retain the original plastic's finish and not be greasy. That's what I set out to accomplish.
Fortunately my father is a chemist, so we came up with this solution.
To answer some of the questions presented here.
I don't like using dyes because they don't produce an even finish, they are messy to use, you can't color match them, and you aren't restoring the original colors.
I expect the durability of this handle to be quite good. For one, when I grab the handle, my fingers come into contact with the back side, not the face, so it's not going to get rubbed. Second, they are oxidized because of age. This is a 21 year old car with only 68,000 miles on it. I picked up off Craigslist in April. It came with a Salvage Title but was perfect inside and out with some minor "fixable" cosmetic issues like these handles.
Why not sand and polish them? Well, treating these handles took maybe 30 seconds of work? It wasn't messy, and no chance of messing up. Also it's a non destructive restore meaning that I'm not removing the material to improve upon it. The plastics' color is restored by resaturating it with a formula that penetrates easily but resists being excreted.
